What is the consensus on Fin/Plate versus Tube/Fin for Trans Fluid Coolers?

Any pics of trans coolers mounted?

I'll get you a picture of this one mounted on Thursday when I see my baby again. :) It comes with everything needed, mounts, fittings, hose, screws, etc. I just mounted it in front of the radiator, passenger side, between the hood latch and horn. Be careful not to put it in the way of the hood latch. LOL opps I'd be curious what the consensus is about different coolers.

Generally speaking if you look at the ratings the tube and fin will be larger with the same rating as a stacked plate cooler.

Stacked plate is more efficient but also more expensive. Smaller so its easier to fit.

I am of the mind that any type of cooler is better than none. I just bought one for the Jimmy, not nearly as big as I wanted it to be, but it will have a cooler.

When I can buy a bigger one I will move it to power steering or something.

A stacked plate cooler is far superior to a tube and fin as far as cooling goes and they are also built alot sturdier.

TOO LATE!!! That is why im buying a new cooler. I had one on my truck, the tube/fin design, they had it held on with the cooler zipties. I didnt like it mounted that way, when I was replacing my trans cooler lines and hard mounted it to the middle support. The only problem was I hard mounted it a lil too high. SLam the hood and right into the top of the cooler (ill get pics tomorrow).

So, I figured id research and shop around for different designs and styles.

:D

see... if you have a plate type, you could make that mistake like me and get away with it with minor scratches:haha::doah:

I screwed a B&M stacked plate on the backside of my hartley tube-grill. Not sure if you managed to score one of those or not.

**UPDATE**

Got a B & M Plate/ Fin style. Made up some steel brackets and im good to go.

And now for the minor carnage.

Can you tell where the hood latch hit? lol

Black spot is NOT a shadow, dunno what it is on the cooler.

All Shiny and New. If I ever do any major towing or what not, ill upgrade to the next size up. This is the only size the speedshop carried and I didnt feel like ordering one thru Summit or Jegs. I wanted to get it mounted up and be done with it. I like how It turned out.

that should help.... might wanna add some chafe protection where the hoses go around the corners... simple as splitting a couple short hunks of hose and wiretieing it over those areas..

holy chit, just realized, am i supposed to be looking for an interior vent for you? :doah: :o

LoL..Dont worry about it. I found one at the junkyard for 5 bux. I did my surgery on it and it all worked out nicely. Ill try to get a pic of it.

I plan to add some chaffing material. I have some hard plastic tube that we use at work. It should work just fine.

Not to hijack my own thread. but here is why I wanted an extra kick panel. I cut this one since I had LINE X behind it anyways.

Your tranny cooler is almost identical to mine. I am a bit paranoid, but I doubled up on the hose clamps.

Instructions were very specific in saying NOT to Double Up on hose clamps..not sure why. but it was on the box or in the instructions or somewhere on it.

What's involved in hooking one of these up? I'm set to swap my TH350 for a 700R4 in the next coming weeks so I'd like to hook one up.

Does anyone sell a kit to mount them to our trucks or does it involve a little creativity and fabrication?

my first post

Its pretty simple to add a cooler. The hardest part is where to mount it. but with the space we have in our K5s, space Isnt a problem.

if your radiator already has the cooler built into it, youll just have to take the return line and run that into your aux cooler and then the output of the aux cooler will tie into the return line going back to your radiator.

You want the hot fluid hitting the radiator cooler first and then the aux cooler and then back to the transmission. Most kits come with 4foot section of hose and connectors etc. Use only rubber hoses made for Trans Coolers, not Fuel Line.

On a 700r , on the side of the transmission, there will be 2 lines. The UPPER line is output to the cooler and the LOWER line is the return from the cooler

I think this one is going to get argued over, depending on individual climate conditions..

You linked a $100.00 trans cooler which had no indication of extra parts. Pop the hood, toss it in there, close hood and drive off??? ;)

Thanks... that was helpful. Doesn't sound very difficult. Fabricate some basic mounts and run some line. Cool.

What's there to argue about the radiator is the most efficient at removing heat since it contains water. Water removes more heat then air.

If you run it to the radiator first you cool it down to radiator water temps then remove additional heat with the air cooler.

If you run it to the air cooler first and then to the radiator you will never get cooler then the temperature of the water in the radiator.

Not trying to argue with you just wondering what the condition would be that you would want to hook it up the other way.
