You want to have about 3/4 to 1" of free play at the pedal before you feel resistance,so the pressure plate fingers wont be in constant contact with the throwout bearing, and keep the disc from being fully engauged ,with no slippage...the adjustment is done on the linkage by moving the position of the peice that goes onto the fork by moving its position ,usualy has two nuts on it and a few inches of threads for adjustment..

thank you! hopefully i'll be getting my rear driveshaft in two weeks after i get back from texas

Yeah, I could tell by the round shifter lever. An NP203 has a flat Hurst shifter.

I was out in the milk barn looking for something and found this by chance. Made me think of this thread.

bringing an old thread back to life.. trans has been in for a while (not much driving time because bottom end of my motor decided to take a crap):doah:

I drove it enough to find out that my 465 is jumping out of 3rd gear at about 2500 RPM.. slammed my hand against the consul once. now i know why it was listed at such a low price... Ive heard this is a pretty common problem with the sm465 but what is the actual cause and how would one go about fixing and preventing this in the future??

i know that the easy fix would be to drop it off at a transmission shop and let the professionals do it but whats the fun in that?:dunno:

from my saved files....

"look at the snap rings betweem 3rd gear and the counter gear( that the big gear by the way). This is where the problem is. the bevel cut third gear while meshed puts a strain and torque on the snap rings and wears them and eventually they break. because movement can occur against the snap rings the fix is simple , remove the countergear from the shaft and discard the two snaprings and replace with a sleeve. (pictured) it occupies the area outlined in yellow. This simple fix was designed by "Tourist Auto" in Salt Lake City,They have been in the manual tranny business for 75 years. They were extrememly helpful when I walked into their shop . There phone is 801 -364-5743. They sell the sleeve for $7.50 . You will need to tell them what tranny you have by examining the trannsmission bolt holes and tell them wether they are threaded or not. (they can explain more) I guess some years were two of the holes wre threaded. Now that I think about it though I dont think this matters unless you are doing a total rebuild.(rebuild kits with bearings were$190 I think.

Is it popping out of second or third? If it is popping out of second, it it what Paul said. ITP in Lincoln will sell you the part for around $5.

Royken, thank you for the info. i will give them a call next week after i get my trans dropped im not sure if im going to do a total rebuild it all depends on what i find inside of there... Ive never pulled a sm465 apart so it will be quite a learning experience for me.

Martin, well its a 3 speed with low so technically it would be second gear. i haven't had very good experiences with ITP but ill give em a call.

You're just buying a $5 part. It's hard for them to **** you too bad on that.
