quick start vs. slow start

Well it sounds like maybe the lack of driving has caused either a gasket or the bowls to start leaking fuel. I would probably have someone stand by the tailpies when you start it up cold... what for a blackish type smoke and see if it smells really rich. If it does either that is probably your problem. Otherwise check to make sure you are getting a squart or decent squart of fuel from the aceel. pump.

Not too sure on the idle level deal. I'd probably try your buddy or a good carb book to diagnois it. I'm not a real big electronic choke guy...especially on quads. I'm actually more of a chokless guy LOL. It seems that the fast idle circuit would have it being messed up all the time and not just sometimes or most times.

Mike, now that you mentioned it, I forgot to tell you about the black smoke shooting out once the truck gets fired up.

It does smoke a little after it gets going.

After it gets warmed up, I can rap the pedal and it quits smoking. But, the idle stays high, too.

I still cant get my buddy to come over and check it out. He is either "never home" or "busy working on something else" and when I do drive by his place, he is doing nothing in the yard.

He has always been like that. Wonder if having 4 kids makes someone like that?!?!

Sounds like you have fuel leaking in while it sits. So pretty much is time to rip it apart and rebuild her. Depending on when you got it maybe Edelbrock would exchange it or let you send it in and get it rebuild for free. Otherwise it isn't that bad of a job. Most places can rebuild them for under $100 around here.

My friend has a Qjet 4 barrel in his blazer and it takes him a while (multiple pumps of the pedal) to get it started. his timing is also a lil off so that may be the problem too.

What I need: 4.57 gears, limited slip front, auto locker in the rear, Force2 Catback, rear springs, SSR's

Well I am assuming like Wes said his is a long crank... But now like in your buddy's case... if it takes multiple pumps to get it going I would start by checking the accelerator pump. That is mostly likely the cause if it isn't firing... otherwise if it fires but dies you may be looking at a choke problem.

if it fast idles all the time, how can you tell if its a fast idle, or linkage? i was wheelin the other day, and my throttle cable got kinked, holding the throttle lever away from the screw stop. and what wires are there to "butcher" i have one on my 79 that goes from the choke to the windshield wiper motor, a trusty source of power i may add

I just got a winch, it takes the fun out of things.

Wes, with the hard start after sitting for days, but starting on a dime from then on, I'd SERIOUSLY be thinking leaky well plugs. Pull the air cleaner, and check for accelerator pump shot. It's a lot easier than pulling the carb. Are you sure the smoke you are seeing isn't the typical blue oil smoke?
