Re-welding cast spring perches

I know certain cast requires nickel rods and pre heating, but do the cast perches from a 14 bolt? I searched and found conflicting answers. I have a Lincoln 200amp A/C Arc welder that I plan to use for this. Can I use regular rods?

I am by no means an experienced welder, but I have tried welding on a few cast sections of a 12 and 14 bolt. The big problem I had welding cast metal that has 30 years of oil and grease permeated through it. (think about how much oil a cast iron frying pan can hold in it's pores) If you don't get ALL of the contaminants out, the oil bubbles up and out before the weld puddle can cool and then it cracks.

Is there a reason you just can't get new steel perches? They're pretty inexpensive.

I cut these off with my plasma cutter and they are in good shape and I prefer the cast over the stamped steel ones.

Honestly I've seen them reused with 2 heavy root welds and 1 weld connecting them fully. You've got to remember that for the most part the ubolts do the work of holding everything together.

Personally I'd just buy new perches or make some from square tube.

The spring perches are forged steel, not cast iron. Weld away, no nickel needed.
