How do I know what ring gear is in the rear axel. This is the stock axel on a 1978 K5 w/ G80. There is a 8.5in, and 8 7/8in ring gear.

For the rear axles the change over year was 1982 from the 12-Bolt to the 10-Bolt - front axle 10-Bolts started getting phased in in 1977 in the majority of K5’s, 10’s & 20’s and were the only front axle after 1980.
If you can post a good quality pic of the differential we can identify what it is for you.
Due to the amount of years and mileage on any older truck ya’ can’t rely on what it should have come with at this point - and ALWAYS verify what you are getting; even if the person or boneyard swears it has whatever they are claiming it to be.
