Rebuilding a rusty D60

My 60 rebuild was similar, carrier and even gears stayed, full blast and clean, and replaced all the wear items. Im still into my 400 axle for around a grand now :doah: and at some point I think the 1000+ ftlb's of torque are going to necessitate a 35spline upgrade :doah: :doah:

I looked at the $900 35 spline upgrade kit. I'm thinking I'd rather gamble that away in Vegas for new years!! :waytogo:

My $500 axle ended up with the labor for the kingpin repair, rebuild install kit, new solid u joints, upper and lower kingpin rebuilds, inner seals, lockright + install, a couple lower grease zerk protectors, new GM SRW hubs and rotors, calipers, and longer wheel studs, lockout rebuild kits, DIY4X cover and ORD crossover, but did keep the stock gears and axleshafts and I'm about 2600.

With those kinds of numbers you could have bought a nice set of boobs!! :haha:

You can seriously dump some cash into a 60 before you know it, I wasn't including the x over parts, I didn't do new hubs and I'm still running the open diff in hopes of the 30 spline stuff lasting a little longer .

Almost everyone here on the CK5 scared me half to death about breaking the 30 spliners.
So I opted up to the 35ers first thing. With 37's Ill probably have a hard time breaking them. I hope...

Meh, I took mine out from under the CUCV and swapped in a lock rite and filled it back up. Crossover and hydro assist and ran it for 3 years with 39.5x15 TSLs. This summer it started leaking oil out the tubes, so I tore into it, replaced seals and bearings, swapping in 35 splines and flanges. Should have it back together before turkey day for a run.

I've got a kingpin rebuild kit here, if the DW ever gets too bad, lol.

:pimp:

I'm going out on Black Friday to help map/blaze some of this years course.

I got the carrier out!!

Does anyone happen to know what the size of the factory pinion nut might be? The largest socket I have is 1 1/4 and it doesn't fit.

[edit]

Well, it is a 1 1/4 but was just so rusted up I had to beat the socket on. Anyway, it's torn down now.

im in the process of rebuilding my d60 drw front right now....stopped in and picked up the new calipers and lower king pin rebuild bearings and seals today...i got lucky and my hubs and bearings are in good shape and since its mostly an offroad truck im just gonna rock em out.

have fun with it man. good luck

oh, on that carrier.....stuff a hand towel in between the gear and the housing. then take a big pipe wrench to the pinion yoke and torque it right out. works like a champ.....when the carrier binds up on the towel it will plop right out....just have something ready to catch it in so it doesn hit the floor,.

I put a wrench on the one of the ring gear bolts and then a towel around a tankers bar and popped it right out. :thumb:

I'm trying to find someone local that does media blasting now.

dangit...thats right its the ring gear bolts not the yoke....idk why i was thinking to put a pipe wrench on the yoke.

I need to check my recipt...but i think the guy said around 20-30 bucks per caliper , not loaded and then i paid around 30 for some good brake pads.

Well, I got one out and then snap!!

have you done the search on kingpin removal....lots of ideas there!

That nut is 1 5/16", which is why you had to beat the 1 1/4" socket onto it... :pimp:
