Rebuilding Dana 60 (question on parts)

? got a link ? check your youtube history for it .

Sorry, but not in the mood to find it. I think it was one of those "un-boxing" videos for a company that sells Spicer OEM stuff. IIRC they talked about the spindle roller bearing have a tighter tolerance with the newer style outer shafts than the older ones.

Yes, I looked at that one. Denny's is one of the few sites that come up in a search if you type in "Spicer axles". If you go to some of the other sites that come up for Spicer axles a lot them say "out of stock" or the price is ridiculously high. In all the Dana-60 axle videos I watched not one of them said Spicer OEM axles rule over any 4340 axle.

Did not know that. Yukon has a good reputation

U.S. Standard Gear is where the parts that did not pass Yukon's strict standards go at a discounted price. Many people have used them with no problems.

I would do 4340 35spline axle shafts all the way, both inner and outer with Yukon 35 spline hubs and you would be set.

When you break a stub shaft, it usually splits down the middle lengthwise and if it overlaps each other it will expand and destroy the spindle making getting the wheel bearing hubs off near impossible.

I broke this 30 spline stub pretty easily, got lucky the splines stayed in the locking hub, you can see the crack that formed up the shaft, this happened on both sides of the stub.

I would recommend 35 spline stub shafts. They are the same diameter all the way through and do not neckdown like these...1572143022075924801807998388732.jpg

I have been lurking since this thread started because I made a $2300 Black Friday parts wish list for my 60 a couple of nights ago. After following @CriticalAction thru Hells at BB and seeing him take out an outer on what seemed like an easy section I decided an upgrade was in order especially considering my rig weighs quite a bit more then his. My point being even when moderate wheeling, stuff can break and spoil the fun.

This was the kind of input I was looking for...the pros and cons of 35-spline outer stub axles on a light duty wheeling application. The 35-spline 4340 outer stub axles do not cost a whole lot more than the 30-spline 4340 outer stub axles at U.S. Standard Gear, but the major price increase in 35-spline stub axles is the locking hubs. I looked at some of the cheaper 35-spline locking hubs from Warn and G2, and there where a number of bad stories on how those where just 30-spline locking hubs turned into 35-spline locking hubs. Those hubs had a very thin locking sun gears on them that would crack under the increased load put on them by a 35-spline stub axle. Yukon (Hardcore Locking Hubs) has one of the few locking hub kits that can stand up to 35-spline stub axles. Those add about $325.00 to the build. The cheaper Warns and G2 locking hubs are about half the price at $150.

Another question about 35-spline stub axles is do they require a different size spindle roller bearing than the 30-spline stub axles do?

These are the cheaper G2 35-spline locking hubs

If you do not have any type of locker in your Dana-60 you may want to get one of those regaurdless of if it is a lunch-box type or better. The reason for a locker is it not only locks your diff, but they also eliminate one of the weak points of any diff the spider and side gears.

The spindle bearing fits both stubs, on my photo above, you can see where the spindle bearing rides and is the same diameter of the 35spline stubs. The 30s just neck down after the spindle bearing.

Thanks. I was watching some Youtube videos on 35-spline stub axles, and you can see how the 35-spline stub axle fills the spindle center hole a whole lot more than the 30-spline stub axle does.

An ARB is on the shopping list, I already have one in the back.

My 89 V3500 has recentered H1 tires and rims, its had the 35 spline spicer D70 outers and warn hubs for over 10 years. I do not rock crawl with it, it's my shop truck and gets called upon to do truck stuff, occasionally it will light wheel usually hauling a load of firewood out of the woods, rescuing another stuck vehicle etc. I dont baby it, but dont abuse it either, yet to have a problem with those outers.
