Rebuilding the Quadrajet

As was mentioned, the kits are ultra generic. (both the "manual" and most parts) When you open it up you will likely see a couple of each of the major gaskets...compare them to the ones you take off to get the right ones.

If the kit was sold for your application or based on the carb stamping number, you'll be good to go. :)
 
yep. I've got tons of "spares" around, and i've actually been lucky enough to have had the right spares around when I rebuilt another. :)

LOL hopefully one day I will have an assortment of spares too, so I don't have to buy ANOTHER when i rebuild another carb! Thanks.
 
one other think to watch out for is, when you use a punch to knock the rolpin out of the arm for the accelerator pump only move it as far as it's needed to get the arm off. If you go to far you'll press it against the housing of the carb and you won't be able to pry it back with a screwdriver when you go to assemble it. ( I did that once and it sucked had to fight with forever)

I read a really good artical in chevy high perfomance once that was on rebuilding q- jets, damed if i can find it now :mad:

Just make sure everything is clean and you blow out all the passages. You'll do fine.
 
In the link highrider gave, it shows a step:

What is a reamer (if thats what its called?) and would it be easier to use compared to paying someone to do it, or buying a J drill bit (I think thats what someone called it) to do it?
Advice, opinions?

you have to tap it with a hammer start light till you feel it move. yea it's obvious soon as you start just wach where it's comming out the other side just make sure you stop with enough room to get a flat blade in the to pry it back.


The reamer is showen in the pic. I would believe you'll only have to worry about this if the throttle blades are slopy and need the bushings :dunno: you might be able to get away with a drillbit

Steve.

That step is for experienced builders, not beginners. What they are doing is replacing worn out throttle shaft bushings.

I would not recommend trying it, if you think those bushings are bad then take it to a pro.

Accelerator pump piston. Thats a used one right?

Don't throw away, compare whats in the carb to the replacement, there are different lengths, I've seen the wrong ones in kits before. Besides, the seal is what wears out, you can swap those if need be.
 
Your kidding right? I thought it was a tool... it has a bunch of scrapes or chips of the metal or whatever is on the shaft (paint?) I'll try to get a better picture of the chips.
What should I do :crazy:
EDIT: This is what came in the box... i'm very unimpressed, 2 of the gaskets are slightly bend (whoever put them in the actual box just squished them in, too small of a box) and it doesn't tell me what each part is. I'll look in the carb book tonight to see if I can identify everything.

Is that accererator pump piston usable if its like that, or should I go back to lordco and get a new one? :confused:
 
Gasket kits usually come like that, with the *thin* gaskets tweaked a bit. The harder gaskets shouldn't be tweaked of course.

That piston is useable, that blue seal is all that really needs replaced, if you like your stock one better, you can remove that seal and put it on yours.

Surprised thats the new one, it does look pretty bad for a new part. :) Again, nothing to worry about though, you'll see when the carb comes apart that the seal is all that matters.
 
Alright. When I pull it apart I will find out.
Any idea why the "shaft" or whatever long skinny part of the piston is all scratched and chipped? Makes me mad!

IIRC those things have some sort of coating/plating on them, and in your case it just looks like it started to come off. No surprise, the piece was probably made in China or the like.
 
Alright. Well hopefully I can start tomorrow evening. We have a house showing tomorrow at 1:00, so that messes up my Saturday. Then on Sunday I have a 10 kilometer run/walk/jog to do. So that will delay it too.

Pushed myself to start disassembling the pratice one (the "new" one) started at 3:30, and went in at 6:00 for dinner, with it almost ready for cleaning.
Took me a lot longer than I thought, but I stared at the book a lot, and looked at the pictures more. So I would look at the picture, then try to do what they are doing. Can't do it, end up trying for 10 minutes...then read book and says there is a different way to do it for my carb. So I laughed at myself a few times. Also got confused a lot. Thank goodness for the diagrams that show what each part is.

Good thing I used the "new" one, and practiced on it before attempting the rebuild on the "old" one I will be using...I was trying to get the

Anyone know what these 4 pieces are? Can't quite figure it out, especially the brass thing. I think the little silver thing is the float needle, but I don't know where the needle in the carb is, to compare it:

Turns out the extra gasket I got in the rebuild kit MIGHT be for the "new" carb I have. It is the same shape and has the same holes, but I'm not positive it will work.

Tomrrow afternoon I hope to clean the parts, and assemble it. Then maybe start on the "old" carb.
