recovery straps from 4wheel parts

Well you didn't get what you thought you were, but I wouldn't call it screwed. Finding a 3" wide "yellow" tow strap for $20 is near impossible. And I wouldn't call the yellow ones junk, my cheapie 2" one has served me for quite a while now and I kid you not that it has bullet holes in it

If anyone who got the yellow strap wants to make me a deal I am looking for a new strap  :deal:

Here's my quote from their website:

"Tired of lugging that chain around in the back of your rig or snapping cheap bungee cord tow straps like they are made out of rubber bands? If so, Make sure you insist on nothing less than Pro Comp Recovery Straps. "Super-stitched" leather-over wrapped end loops complement the stylish steel grey colored strap. Not only is the Pro Comp strap an attractive and "must have" addition to your trail kit, the strap itself is made of a durable, high strength nylon which resists weather, moisture and abrasion."

I have seen cheap straps at cheap prices and have chosen not to buy them because they are cheap. I ordered these because they are a superior product at a really good price. I will do exactly like they suggest and "insist on nothing less than Pro Comp Recovery Straps."

Good deal or not.......it's still not the deal they advertised.

This isnt a new thing with them. On 11/08/03 I noticed in all of their mag ads they listed a Pro Comp 3X30 strap for cheap, I *think* it was advertised at $29.99 or $19.99. Anyway, I called the 800 number and asked if this was for real and they said yes they have sold tons at that price but I'd have to pay for shipping and since I lived pretty close to a store I should just drive down and pick one up. This makes sense so I go to the store and they basically tell me Im insane, that there's no way they could sell that strap for that price. I pull one of their mags off their rack and show them the price in the ad. Then I pull a Petersons mag out of my pocket and show them the price again. THEN I tell them about my conversation with the phone salesrep and give them his name. They still wouldnt do it so I demanded to speak with the store manager. Some nineteenish yr old boy with earings comes out and tells me that the price is below his price and that they arent responsible for mis-prints. I get ugly and he agrees to call his supervisor. She tells him that since a misprint occured that they would agree to sell it at their cost. So I finally walk out the door paying $35.99 and feeling scammed. They acted like they were doing me a monumental favor. This all took almost an hour of haggling. I really dislike the place.

I had a similar experience with a shackle mount and Im through with them.

Frankly, I feel about the same way. I ordered those "hoping for the best, expecting the worst". Frankly, I didn't think they would honor them at all, and I would cancel the order when they "corrected" the price, or if necessary, back charge on the VISA if they pulled some of their typical bait and switch. But then people started getting them, and I had hope. Then some people got the "substitute", and with my luck, I knew what was coming. :( But at least they are not digging in their heals this time, claiming I got what I ordered and refusing to refund or something equally underhanded as so many have experienced in the past...

I just got mine and they were the yellow ones. They do look reasonably nice but are not what I ordered.

The guy at 4wpw said they were brand new straps that they were planning to sell next year (from a different manufacturer), and that they were actually rated at 2,000 pounds more than the pro comp strap (he told me several times that they were a better strap).

I called Pro Comp, and the real straps are indeed on back order and they don't expect to see them until the end of February. I told him about the situation and he seemed interested in seeing this thread. Maybe they'll get on 4WPW's back a little for the bait and switch.

So post up if you got or get the wrong part -- lets give them some proof of 4WPW's unsavory actions. :(

That sucks ass, I got mine around the end of Nov. and they were the Pro-Comp as advertised. I should have ordered more, but I would be pissed if they tried to pull a switcheroo like that on me. They are so friggin' stupid that even though the guy gave me a hard time when ordering it at the $19.99 price, they still sent me that cheezy magazine with it still advertised at $19.99.

This is the first time I've dealt with 4WPW, and probably the last, I was unimpressed, and you guy's stories don't help that impression.

When it comes down to it you guys are getting an $80 tow strap for $19.99 because someone made a mistake at 4WPW, I would deal with the crappy service and be happy you got such a freakin good deal :deal:

I dont believe its a mistake, I believe they purposely put the price in the ad to create an illusion that they are a low cost supplier. Seriously, how difficult is it to proof read an ad? Also if its a mistake why have they been putting this price in their ads off and on since 2003?

I bought the same pro comp 30,000 strap over the summer for $54.99. so is it really a $80 strap? nope they mark up the price so it seams like your getting an killer deal. it's still a good deal but not like they what you too think.

Well whatever, its a deal. You can't get a cheap yellow strap at Schucks for 19.99.

And I still would like to buy one of the inferior yellow straps that some of you guys got by mistake, $20 + shipping :deal:

No. What it actually comes down to is that we got a $19.99 tow strap for $19.99, that's the price they listed it at (in several different publications and online). It's not our fault they are inept, and they should honor the price (and product) they advertised. We are not dicks for wanting them to do what they said they would do, they are dicks for trying to weasel out of it. If they had responded to every order with "Sorry, that's a misprint, we cannot honor that price" I would be annoyed and probably not deal with them again, but they would be within their rights. But to take the order, charge someone's card and then send out an inferior product rather than offer a refund or state up front that they can't honor it is sleazy, period.

Bottom line, it's not the part I ordered for the price I agreed to.

Tell you what, I'll sell you a complete Dana 60 for $100 bucks. When you get here, it will be a Dana 44. Still a good deal, and I'll tell you that for your purposes it will actually be better since it weighs less and has more clearance, so I expect you to accept it and like it without any flack or backing out.

False advertising is illegal. Before they sent that strap they should have let the customer know what he was getting and have him agree to it or just give them a refund.

Ok, for the last time....Yes its a rip-off for them to switch it, but my point is that a 3"x30' strap, even a yellow type, is a lot more than $20 ANYWHERE. So yes, they suck for switching it. Call them up, get a the right one for FREE, and sell the yellow one. To me that sounds like a free tow strap all said and done, hell you guys will probably make money if you say throw the yellow one up on Ebay and sell it - all the ones I have seen on there are $30-40+. even for a yellow one.

And I am guessing that technically they are within their rights to "substitute" with an equivalent product. Many argue one is better than the other, but I would like to see some test results done in a lab setup before I could say which is better. I am guessing the Pro Comp one is surrounded with hype and advertising with no proof to back it up :deal:  :rotfl:

I'm not getting any free straps, they are sending a "pick up" for the yellow ones.

My main beef with the yellow ones not being equivalent is the lack of leather wrapping on the eyes. So I would say that is not an equivalent product, and that is the only real reason I care about one or the other as long as both are equally flexible, equally durable, and have the same rating. I also like the white better just because I do, but that would not be enough reason for me to complain...

I just realized, aren't you the same guy that does not want to accept the lab tests in the K&N thread? I'm guessing that was jokingly aimed at me for being pro-test and anti-hype in the K&N thread? :haha: Well, show me the test where these yellow straps hold up equally well (including the non-leather wrapped ends holding up in harsh use equal or better to the leather wrapped ends) and is equally flexible and durable, and I'll gladly accept the substitute. But with a clear difference in materials and construction, when one obviously appears superior to the other, and the one which appears superior I have experience with, I'll go with gut instinct on this one until I see data to the contrary. :D We shall see how it shakes out...

Thats just it, the yellow straps are NOT on par with the pro-comp ones. Not even close. The pro-comp straps are heavier, softer, way more flexible, have leather wrapped ends, and are easier to clean. Ive already gotten to "test" mine, and am definately like the pro-comps better. Lab tests or not, i would be irate if i got sent yellow ones and they tried to feed me some BS about them actually being better.

EDIT: Sorry BadDog, that was supposed to be for the guy you were replying too.

I'm not getting any free straps either. They are sending a return authorization for the yellow ones and promising that we will get the Pro Comp version -- sometime in the next few months. The fact that we are getting a good deal is the only reason I'm not extremely upset.

FWIW, I just got my second set of straps. These are white instead of yellow, but still clearly not Pro Comps. Different material (nylon type stuff) with no leather wrapped ends. Called up to report the mistake for the second time, and was told these WERE Pro Comps! The "manager" actually tried to feed me a line along the lines of, "Those are Pro Comps. The reason we are selling them so cheap is that they forgot to print the name on them." Hah! I've got a Pro Comp and these are NOT Pro Comps. Not at all surprising given 4WPW reputation. Still, I'm insisting on getting what I ordered. So, now I am supposed to wait till Jan 5 and call back to see if there are any in yet.

Anyone remember when the "Pres" of 4WPW came on here and said he wanted to hear about any underhanded business so he could "fix it"? Or was the PBB? Anyone got that number or email or whatever? If so, will you please PM or email it to me? Sounds like a good one to toss to him...
