Reinstalling A Transfer Case

Just hoist that sucker onto your chest -- You get plenty motivated to bench press it when you can't breath. Then once you get it up, it pretty much has to go on or you're gonna drop it on yourself and cause some pretty serious injury! Nothing like the threat of death to motivate you to do it right the first time!

This is dumb.... I tried to take my 208 off this way......Call me a pussy, but havin the trans fluid spilled on me, then the weight...yeah dropped it, that hurt. lol

haha, I take 208s and 241s up / down by hand, but I don't mess around with anything heavier than that!

I shoulda added a smilie face, as I was more joking than anything :D

i usually use a high lift floor jack.if im doing trans work,i just leave it on the crossmember and jack it up and slide it back.put a ratchet stap on it to hold it up and thats it.jack up the tranny before hand to keep the pressure off the engine mounts.i do also have a 3 ft throw jack to help get it close to in place.then wiggle it in.you can always jack up the truck and take the wheels off and then set it down on jackstands to get the truck down lower also if you dont have a high lift jack.i did it the bench press method the first time i did it.get it up there and have a buddy slide the crossmember under and get the bolts lined up.that was a fun one.especially with a 205.203 or 208 would be much easier.what are they 50 pounds difference?

well unfortunately for me Ive got that gear driven monster of an engine block sized 203.... there will be no bench pressing that thing.

I welded a homemade bracket to install my 203 when my trans went kaboom. got an old chitty floor jack and jack that sucker in place. done it 5 times with the same bracket. really simple to make just used some 1.5" square tubing and some mesurements.

Thats how I did it (241). Got away with it 3 times then I dropped it on my chest. But yes.... the threat of a full dental rebuild can seriously motivate you the get the tcase on the crossmember.:D

If your rig is on a slope the tranny fluid shouldn't be an issue... I.E. nose pointed downhill.

If you don't want to spend the money on a tranny jack then get a buddy to heave ho that thing in there.

Personally I just use a 2 1/2 ton floor jack, they are $70 at harbor frieght, just tie the xfer case to it somehow, with zip ties or something, then jack the thing up there.

THis is how I did it the first few times, but with a regular floor jack. The crossmember helps to keep the trans/t-case (I do them both at the same time) steady and the jack is under the trans for the lifting. Once you get it lined up, thread the bolts throught the bellhousing and bump the engine. Seats it first time, every time. Bolt the crossmember to the frame and the rest is downhill:D

revisiting this, and the link to the harbor freight jack isnt working anymore.

Is this still the easy way to do this? Any revelations since 2009

Needing to do a sye, rebuild, and even replace adapter seals.

the link works fine, just use all the irrigation hose and a couple snatch blocks and build a pulley system to hoist the case in/out.
pfft, noobs...

:haha::haha::haha: I dropped my 203 (before the 205)off the jack when taking it out, luckily I was under it at the time covered in gear oil.:haha: I'm glad my neighbor could see me squirming around under my blazer from across the street. Ah good times.

I bought one of those cheap adapters to convert my floor jack into a tranny jack--its always done the trick for me--I chain the case to it so it cant slide off the thing though,it has angle adjustment and made installing or removing a t-case a lot easier than using sheer muscle...

We had no tranny jack at the junkyard,we'd just hoist the vehicle off the ground with the loader--but when we'd have to put a tranny in a "good" vehicle and could not do it that way,we were forced to invent other methods...we tried using a creeper with a crude tranny jack made from a sissors jack, that worked a few times before the plywood gave out--then once we put a TH400 in a chevy step van, using two sheets of plywood with an old inner tube sandwiched in between them--we slid it under the van and blew the tube up with the air hose and shoved it right in!..the TH400 has a fairly flat pan though,a t-case is tricky to deal with as you have hardly any flat areas to set it down on anything...

Haha, a few years pass and that happens sometimes :doah:

Try this one

It's definitely nothing fancy but I can remove the trans or t-case from my rig by myself with no problem. With a much taller rig it may not reach, the bottom of my frame is 21".

Summit sells a 1k lb that goes on sale for $100 from time to time.

I really wanna poknt out thst letting the weight of the tcase rest on the output shaft of the tranny like people were talking about it extremely bad for the output bushing of the tranny. That babbit material is extremely soft and I would not recommend smashing it with the output shaft. Get a couple bolts in the adapter before you take the weight off the jack.

Used to bench press them back in the day. To old for that now and these days, I'd like to think smarter.

Hoisted from the rollcage is my preferred method now.
