L29, also I am in to go at least to Ohio, although skipping out on the last stop and missing long haul status seems kinda silly so Ill probably do it all. Emily and I went to Holley MoParty last year at beech bend and know of a cool little cabin to stay in. Its a nice venue with plenty of shade.

Or a 8.1 with allison trans to get a all in 1 package and overdrive with extra gear to split and deeper 1st over th400 . There out there in 2wd and even c4500-c5500 with park brake on trans if you need that .
I would have said 8.1 which I am putting in my other suburban but he gave us the choices

No 8.1 as i have to many options. I also have an LQ9 sitting here.

The other reason I was considering the l86 is for better mileage. But I guess anything above the 4 I am getting would be a bonus. This truck will be a long run multi day trip truck. There is another one in March that is Chevy trucks only. They said I would be welcomed.

Stock L29 you should be getting 8-10 mpg
If you tweak the engine and ecm like Scott's you might get better too

I vote L29. You already have it. Cam and spring swap, holley ecm and go. The LT is a great engine, but I seriously doubt would get any better mileage if you are flogging it at a higher RPM trying to keep the engine in the peak of the torque curve. I think the LT wouldn't work as well with 4 speed auto either.

The ease of the L29 is it will fall right back in where the old 454 was. You could use the accessory drive off the old engine or use the serp drive that may have come with the L29.

For a situation like this I think anytime you can swap to an upgraded version of what you have it’s the way to go. You can bolt it in and you won’t have to chase those inevitable gremlins that pop up with swapping in something totally different when you’re 700 miles from home.

Can you do a compression and leakdown and feel some of the valve/guides for wear? Those 3 things would tell you a lot, in addition to the condition of the oil and spark plugs of course.

That was a good running engine when I had it distributor is new never run I believe all the gaskets were replaced the wiring harness was trimmed down I know it doesn't look like it . I had it in my mounted in my cc when I decided to go another route it was the wife's daily also milage is what is shown in the instrument cluster
