ReTonkulous

Utlilmaster P30
I sat and researched some stuff last night. Can not remember any of it this morning.

Since this is the engine that was with the 4l80 that I am going to put in the truck, I can control it with the computer. What I could not find is, can I program the VSS out of the computer. The transfer case is not going in, so no VSS output. I have a GPS receiver for the speedo, but in trees or canyons, it fails. It would seem to be an issue. I do not want to have to rebuild the transmission to a 2wd or buy a transmission just for VSS.

Have you pulled the rear sensor plug to verify no tone ring ?

If none look for a kit to do it on tail housing . I think i have seen one in the past .

But the true 4x4 tailshaft is not 2wd bolt on yoke friendly. And need to swap the oil feed plug @ 3°clock on the tail of the trans for the pin hole one to lube 2wd bearing .

I have still the bolt on 2wd 4L80-e shaft and housing . At that point have tone ring added to trans and be factory setup .

What year is the trans? Didn't some of the early ones have the reluctor ring already there but covered with a plug instead of a second sensor?

No tail shaft or housing. I have a machined plate to cap the back off in place of the transfer case with a bearing and then use the TH400 yoke. No place for a tone ring doing that.

No matter what controller you use, factory, Holley, standalone, etc, they will all require a output speed sensor to control it.

I think your best bet is marketplace or craigslist, sell that one, and buy a used working 2WD one, or maybe someone wants to trade? I see them all the time.

You could theoretically wire it for manual control with my diagram, however, you would have to use your GPS speedo you don't like. You could hook your e-speedo to the turbine sensor in the trans, but it will be off by the gear ratio in every gear but 3rd. Actually, it depends on how many teeth on the turbine target wheel, if its not 40 (I believe that's the output wheel), it would be off by that ratio too in every gear.

Another option is to put a driveshaft speed sensor on and use that for the speedo. I don't think the trans controller will allow you to control a trans that way, it will depend if it it allows you to tell it how many teeth per revolution.

If you go to a Holley controller, that should circumvent the need for the 4wd/low range tone ring requirements. Then you’d just need the parts. Or maybe a gear vendor and go double over

Sometimes I really need to pay attention more.

It started raining here, so I had to move inside. All of my money making ventures are outside. So I started looking at what it would take to add the 2wd output and tone ring. Looking at pictures on line, i realized that the tone ring is on the planetary housing. Inside of the main case. Not on the output like the 350, 400, 700r4's. I vaguely remebered a sensor in that hole on this transmission.

Hey, look at that.PXL_20240112_182704281.jpg

Pulled the sensor and felt a tone ting inside.

So does this mean I have VSS to supply a controller?

Yes, you have what the comp needs, you need a tailshaft/output for 2wd

Yes that's the second sensor I was thinking of, I was thinking that hole had a plug and not a sensor on the 4x4s because it had VSS on the tcase.

Engine is 96 up. I assumed the transmission was also. Early 4L80e had it in the case. So I got lucky.
