Cage kit, through the dash or in front of dash.

OK, sorry for the delay. I fell asleep in my recliner.:D

We have two distinctly different cages being discusssed right now. While the basic kit would only be different a pillar bars for us, its a lot different on the users end.

For instance, when you drop the tube through the dash, there are some sacrifices that have to be made. The ebrake pedal is most certainly in the way on the drivers side. On the passenger side its the fresh air vent. You really can't go shallower into the dash to clear these without then poking the tube back through the lower portions of the dash. The lower mounting point will be on the slanted portion of the foot well leading up to the firewall. This portion of the floor has no structure to it what so ever. That being the case a frame cage tie in at that point, IMO is absolutely necessary. There are some work arounds for the ebrake and vent being discussed but they aren't the most elegant. The vent isn't so bad but the ebrake is cause for concern. There are ways to get around these things but they also have their issues. Still alot of discussion and some designs being crafted so we haven't set anything in stone just yet.

In front of the dash there are the issues of decreased leg room for ingress and egress and ultimately the air vents are blocked. These tube can definitely make contact with your legs in a nasty rollover so again, IMO they would need padding applied. One advantage to this cage is you can set the foot right on top of the rocker support which has a lot of structure. It wouldn't necessarily need to be tied back to the frame.

That's just some of the discussion right now.

The cage will be a b-pillar hoop, halo and a-pillar bars including floor plates designed for each of the two kits, in front and through. From there we will add options to the basic kit.

The first will be done in a standard pickup cab. Then we'll get the basic kit in the blazer followed by the family cage in the blazer and then suburbans and lastly crew cab if their is enough demand for such a thing.

Sweet. Hurry up cuz I need one for my rig!
With everything listed, i hope the first set up ends up with a in front of dash because I want to keep my e brake.

I have to keep an ebrake because I have a standard and drive my truck on the street so it is required by law.

Pickup being done first, very cool! I might be very interested once I know more details.

I think the E-brake pedal and A-pillar bar could both fit depending on placement. Would be tight but should be doable. Manuals would be a tight fit certainly. The upper part of the pedal assembly I think would pose the biggest challenge.

There is a work around for the ebrake pedal. A hand brake would be better at any rate.

Yah like weld an extension onto it:D:D:D

Some instructions on how to adapt say a toyota system where it goes under the dash would be nice.

I say this cause I am thinking of what your ultimate sales will be and while most on here tend to be not worried about having to change a couple things on their own I have realized only a small amount of the whole k5/pickup of these generations is on this website. So I think after word got out you would sell alot of cages to those who might have to hire a welder to get it all in. The more complete it is the better.

Thats been my experience when helping someone install something. When one who is, shall we say, less experienced than the faster mabricators we have on here, they can freak out at having to relocate the smallest thing.

I am excited to see how it all works out Kert. Just make sure it fits tight to the roof. A guy my height in a stock seat doesn't have much room.

I'm sure you'll come up with something good Kert. A toyato/nissan style handbrake would actually be pretty cool.

Would you be doing a dash crossbar? When I've looked into building a cage for mine, seems that hiding that bar without blocking/relocating too much stuff is the biggest issue. Easiest spot is right over the dash but then the stock defrost vents get partially blocked.

I want to keep ac so I am not sure what is Best. I have a hydro brake lock though.

I would rather have a center hand brake like a train engineer.

dusty, but ya get the idea...

That's a sweet setup Paul but you have bucket seats. I'm running a bench and plan to keep it.

I want to a minimal cage. Main hoop, halo, A-pillar drop bars and a couple crossbars. Will make the truck a ton safer on the street and mild trails. Plus give me a place to put some needed hand holds for getting in.

I always liked those ones that pull out, and turn, from under the dash...

I am just really excited to see what you come up with Kert. Everything I have ever bought from you exceeds my expectations :waytogo:

I voted in front of the dash for a lot of the same reasons as have already been discussed here. Deuling made a lot of points that I think are more true than people give credit on this site. Let's be real with ourselves, out of the entire population of just the USA, us CK5ers are an extremely small percentage. Let alone how many members do we have on this site that are not even slightly active on the site. My point behind this is sometimes we start thinking that because we think that "through the dash cages" are the only way to go, that anyone who currently owns or has ever owned a 67-91ish chevy/gmc thinks the exact same way. The reality of it is that they don't. I am a victum, as I am sure most others are on this site (or pirate4x4 to add to it), that when you start reading and reading thread after thread, your mindset on what a truck should be gets distorted. The other day I started to think that if your rig wasn't narrowed front and rear than you were a loser . The point behind this stupid rant of mine is.....wait, I forgot :haha:. There are just a lot of people out there, in my opinion, that will purchase the "in front of dash" cage because of the simplicity. And there is nothing wrong with that. And in Kert's mind, he is looking at it from a business standpoint of "how can I sell the most products." And to be honest, offering both kits is the right way in my mind. That is the best way to maximize customers. But I will agree....through the dash cages are bad a$$. And who knows, once I see what Kert comes up with, maybe I will change my mind and go that route. All in all, DIY4x rocks :D

You cut holes in it.

And im trying to look at it through the eyes of the company thats trying to sell a product. Yes you and alot of guys on here put it through the dash. But you also all have benders and did it all yourself.

This is a kit, which I imagine, some kid with just a welder, could order, receive, tack together and weld up. Boom done easy install.

I want to go through the dash when i do mine so dont judge me and think im being hack or anything. Its my standpoint from trying to sell a kit.

Could not agree more. I would make two kits, one thru dash and one in front. Couple bars different but other then that same kit. Hayyy...there's a thought. :D

Nothing could be further from the truth. But that is just the way it goes.

2 kits for the pickup cab. 2 kits for the blazer, 73-75, 2 kits for the 76-78 blazer. 2 kits for the 79-91 (I think.) Suburban base kit may, still researching these. Haven't looked in to crew cabs much yet. but probably just two more kit there.

So, possibly 12 different kits.

Any news/development on theses?

Nothing to report yet.

Lot of work to come up with that many different configurations.

Got it. Was just curious.

We'll do them as we can. We have a pickup cab in the shop now so that will be the first kits.

After that, the 79-91 Blazer.
