rough ride with a 6 inch lift

MEGALADON said:
is it true I will get a rough ride if I add a 6 inch lift to my 82 pickup.
or is it only when you add blocks. this truck will be a daily driver.
thanks

a 4 will ride MUCH better.. especially if your DDing it.. if you don't plan on going bigger, 4" would do you fine with a 33x12.50... keep in mind, your pretty much garaunteed to need shaft work with a 6.. i'd go flip out back and EZ rides up front..

what about 35/12.5 tires with 15/10 rim??
I would need a 6' lift now, right??

would this make a horrible DD??
I really like the looks.

Would this size be to much for a 10 bolt diff, front and rear???

I have 35/12.5 tires on a 15x10 rim and the car is my daily driver. Rather than doing a 6" lift, I have a 4" spring in the front and a shackle flip netting 4" in the rear. While doing all that I also did a 1" body lift. I have never had anything rub or bind cruising in the concrete jungle.

With a shackle flip you can also easily use a 56" spring rather than a 52" spring in the rear (i have no idea what yours has already), which will give you a slightly more comfortable ride as well.

All things being equal - A TALLER SPRING WILL GIVE YOU A STIFFER RIDE. That being said, if you are into that go for 6", if you want a little more comfort try to stay with a 4" lift.

right now I'm bone stock. I seen a 85 driving around town that looked awesome, seen him one day at walmart, looks big from far away, but the closer I got the smaller the truck, :) he said he had 35's and a 6" lift.
man it looked awesome.

here is mine for now.

I have 8in skyjacker with 3 in body and 40in swampers on my shortbed. Ill be honest, it rides like a brick wagon  , not to mention the driveline angles! Its just my play toy, not a daily driver. If I would of been a member here first, I would of done a shackle flip and some fender trimming to cut the lift down. I never thought fender trimming could be done to look so good and factory like. My truck is very straight and I hated the thought of trimming. But like I said ive seen some pics here that make it look factory!

If you want 35's run a 6" lift. A 4" will probably rub if it gets off camber.

I have the 4" tuff country lift, springs all-round, and to be quite honest it rides better now then it did before, I had the heavy duty ft. sus. package with rear add-a-leaf before, and it rides better with the tuff country lift, I had an 86 k-5 with a rough country suspension lift, rode real stiff. Tuff country all the way!

i ran 4inches on 35s then 36 on 10 in wide rims.i rubbed on the draglink a little but that isint a big concern. if you go 6in your going to be looking at new brake lines and possibley new driveshats.

all suspension lift kits above 2inches IMO will give you a rough ride, but if you dont want to rock front to back, then get rear springs because old springs with blocks in the rear and new springs up front really dosent help.

i reccomend BDS or TUFF COUNTRY, but if you are on a budget look at superlift and sky jacker.

good luck, with it

. If you have a pickup a shackle flip might not be for you. They are not recommend it you tow anything of decent weight.

Harley

This makes sense to me because of the added stress of the leverage.. But on the other hand I see people saying that a shackle flip is fine for towing It seems like every post I read where somebody ask if they can tow with a shackle flip you hear every other person say something different  I would like to go with a flip but I don't want to sacrifice towing to do it because my truck will be used for multipurpose..

Now as far as what lift to run most of that has been covered but I will add to it just a little.. I just bought a truck like the white one in the picture except mine is a K20 and has a 14 bolt ff and a Dana 44.. It has 2 inches of lift and 33 12.50"s but it had 35"s and it cleared fine..Now I guess you could get the 35"s to rub with full flex but I didn't try.. I took the 35's off because they had some leaks and were getting bald.. The only reason that I got the 33"s on there now is because the fellow I got the truck from just had bought them brand new and didn't have them mounted when I got it so I used what I had..

I think a few things to consider when your looking at what lift clears what tire is, If your going to go where some of these fellows go { rocks, hills and a lot of off camber stuff} then you might want to run low lift, big tires and fender trimming.. A example would be 4inch lift, 38.5 tire and fender trimming.. You said this was just going to be a daily driver so you could go with a a diiferent set up.. A example would be 4inch lift 35 or maybe a 36 inch tire and no fender trimming if you are just going to stay on the highway.. But what fun is that :haha:

In my area the only thing we have is mud so my truck won't see much articulation and flex.. I think the closest trails for me is about 6 hours away  . Some of these guys are very lucky because they have all kinds of trails and hills and such to ride around on... So they set their trucks up to handle that type of terrain.. So keep that in mind when making your decision :thumb:

For what it is worth the lift laws around here suck so I'm going with a 6inch lift and 36 inch tires.. The 36"s and a 6inch lift would put me just a hair over maximum legal height

I had 35's on a 6" Rancho lift and it road like a dream. I had no problems with it being a DD or being stiff... I would tell you any day of the weak that that's the way to go.

Wait... am I understanding this right? You're saying if you're short on money go with Sky Jacker???? They've got some of the most expensive lifts out there... and TC has probably some of the best valued lifts out there... :doah:

will 35's have a great affect on my axle ???
do they stress the axle more??
Do I have a greater chance of breaking
my axles with 35's other than 33's

Sure it'll stress them a bit more... but if you don't plan on doing any hardcore wheeling you'll be perfectly fine. It might slow you down a bit also unless you get new gears... but you don't NEED them... All in all... you'll be fine

The first thing you need to do is find out what gear ratio you have. that is the biggest obstacle. bigger tires will gear the truck up some, most of the 70-80's trucks are already geared too high stock. Bigger tires just makes it worse. 33's will be fine with the stock axles strength wise. 35's are basically the max but there is a HUGE difference between a BFG 35/1250 A/T vs. a 35x16" bogger.

I was going to go with the M/T BAJA CLAW, Love the look :D

They are going to wear out quik with using it as a dialy driver. I would recomend the Swamper SSR, you would more miles out of them
