Running 35x15.5 on 1/2 ton axels and 3.08 gears? Bad Idea?

Im a little confused though, I had it set in my mind from replies I need to go with 4:10s.. Now you say 4:11s?

for real-world use, there is no difference between 4.10 and 4.11, as long as the diffs match. don't go using 4.10 in one diff and 4.11 in the other. offroad, tire slip would easily let you get away with running 2 ratios that close. but why bother? just do it right. and this is assuming the ratios are actually different, and not just a rounding thing.

ff means full floater...as in the axle shaft has its own set of bearings that it rides on...its a much stronger setup and if you break a shaft on a ff the wheel doesn't come off ;)

open just means that the carrier is open...no locker or any traction aid...so when I go around a corner the outside tire spins faster b/c its having to travel a farther distance. But at the same time if I'm out in the sand or mud somewhere and one tire looses traction all the power goes to that tire and doesn't help at all...

Hmmm, so my best bet is regearing before I decide to throw those super swampers on? I dont want to break anything, I am broke enough as it is.

So to regear, all I need to buy is the ring and pinion, right? And I have 10bolt front and 12bold rear right?

iono what you have I'd have to see pics...

You need the ring/pinion gear set and a master install kit. Then the tools to properly set them up. But I'm assuming that your just going to let a shop do it.

as a wise ck5 member once said, "theres alot of buying in this 'built not bought' stuff"

:haha:Thats funny. I wanted to put these tires on this weekend, but it doenst look like I will be able too.

I think I am going to keep an eye out for some 3/4 ton axels, are those dana 44's or dana 60's or what?

I found a dana 50 with 4.11 front axel for $400, should I jump on that or wait for a set? Should I try a junkyard or something?

3/4 ton will be a 14ff rear and either an 8 lug 10b front or an 8 lug d44 front.

1 ton is when you get the d60 front.

ker-pass. thats a ford IIRC. maybe dodge its gay. you want to look for them that most stands out is the 8 lugs. then the very angular diamond shape of the 14bff, then if you can find a dana 60 which has 60F in the lower right corner of the pumpkin. get it. or theres the dana 44 which is a small dana 60 or it will be a 10 bolt with the little ears on the corners of the housing. watch out for the more round semifloating 14 bolt.

Crap, so if I upgrade axels, I have to go 8lug? Both sets of my wheels are 6 lugs, I might just re-gear, I found a member selling a ring and pinion set, I offered 30 plus shipping cause he was asking 50, but that was also for a carrier.

A 50 came in Super Duty's stay away from it. 10b, and 44 8 lug is a 3/4 t as is 14bsf, and 14bff, 14bff came in 1 tons too. 60's only came in 1 tons.

And if you stay with your current set up you should add another 200 hp to be sure and smoke the tranny quickly, then you can really start your build.

J/K on that last part ok?

Hahaha okay.

I dont know jack **** about axels or gears or anything, id be lost without ck5.

I found these on eBay for my rear.. Would 4.56 suck on the freeways? I have to take the freeway for about 20 minutes to get to table mesa, after that I want more power in the mud and such.

Damn, about 200 for each set of gears and then another 75 each for the install kits, plus labor, I am looking clost to 1500 just to do the gears, I think I would be better off looking for some 3/4 ton axels with 4.11 in them already, is an axel swap hard? How many hours should it take if my mechanic were to do it?

allocate 6 hours per axle i would guess. i just did an axle swap, it was really fun but i get my jollys from workin on my rig. you should set up a good week if your unframiliar with your rig to do it. you NEED new Ubolts and to check closely on the ebrake setups. check inside the diff cover to see for any wear or abnormal scarring pits and bad stuff, the teeth should be evenly worn and smooth. check for free spinning and smooth operation. take pics! ck5 is here to help, thats what that little member thing you bought is good for.

Hmmm. Well for now, can I run the 35's for a few months til I can afford new axels? Or is it really a bad idea? Right now I am on 31x10 inch AT's, it feels like it has alot of low end power but sucks on the freeways, is it going to be alot worse then now?

oooo and don't forget centering pins...and late nights cussing to swap steering arms...and pickle forks...haha yeah...pickle forks. dang that was one hell of a week for me :)
go read my big thread on my axle swap...lots of crap in there but if you have about an hour or so its a good read on the ups and downs that I went through...3/4 ton swap by a noob! :)

haha it took you FOUR transmissions to figure that out? :doah:
no it didnt, i knew this before i even put the tires on, the first 350 was a rebuilt one when i bought the truck, it lasted with 35s for yr and half, all the other trans is out of parts trucks and im even surprised 2 of them worked, they sat in shed for atleast 15yrs, the 700r got full of water, now back on topic,

mindless it would be cheaper for you to do a 3/4 swap but you never know what your gettin when buyin used parts, most buy the 1tons but before it goes in there rig its gone thru, i would just regear because you will know what you got, then when ur in the need for upgrade later, those 10bs with gears will sell like hot cakes hopefully to atleast pay for the 60 later

if you lived closer i have some 3/4 4.56s layin around and also 2 eatons with 5.13 with det and 4.56, one day these will end up in my truck but im just havin 2 much fun runnin 10b, such good ground clearance, and they do hold up as long as no jarring effect and keepn all 4s on the ground

I know this has kind of been discussed, but I am wondering is it bad in the long run to do this? Is it too much strain on my axels? I have 4" blocks in the back, is that a bad idea to run 35's with those?
terrible idea, unless u never go wheelin'... the big tires add way too much torque on the corporate 10 semi-floater. bigger tires = more strain on axles.
