Rustoleum Paint Job with $75 Harbor Freight HVLP Turbine Gun

<= taking notes from Professor Ryoken

+1. i bought a HF gun with the idea of eventually painting my truck. well i used it to paint some furniture and i gotta say it was not very good. took a while to get it to spray decent but it eventually worked ok. i dont think ill use it to paint the k5 now

Big6, so most of a year on...what do you think of the paint job?

How's it holding up? How's the fade?

Do anything different?

I probably missed it but did you cut the paint with a thinner? If so, what and how much? Seen Acetone and Mineral Spirits mentioned and anything from 20%-50% ratio to the paint.

I found this in the first post...
I used the smallest needle/nozzle combo that came with the gun, and mixed the paint 50/50 with mineral spirits.
I would also like to know how it's holding up. Now that my right bedside has some new "character" I'm not afraid to try something silly with some paint.

Hey guys, I'll get some pics up quick. It is holding up really nicely as far as fading or chalkiness etc. Parked in the driveway ever since the paintjob.

Yeah, I cut it 50/50 with mineral spirits. Remember I put on at least 3-4 coats (can't remember I'll have to re-read my own thread).

But you have to spray thin enough that you don't really see the solid color until the second coat. It is easy to run! It is very thin paint and you have to wait at least 24 hours between coats. But the thin-ness of the paint it was lets it self-level and not need sanding.

Lighting wasn't that great by the time I got out there, but tried to get the one spot where the sun was still shining to show the color.

I drove the truck all winter and it sat in my driveway since I pulled it out from the "paint booth" (garage) I haven't washed the truck since I laid down the paint, rain is the only thing that washed off all the dried salt.

Others who have done the rustoleum do a lot of wetsanding and polishing to get the shiny finish after the final coast has dried, I haven't. But I assume with a little elbow grease I could a "shine" but for my puroses I'm very very happy with it.

The spot above the wheel well is my own "patch panel" of that I pounded out on an anvil and welded in there, so it is not paint problem...just a skill problem with the body man :)

Looking good man. Definitely got me considering this.

Peeling/flaking issues?

How many coats did you do?

Aj, I did at least 4 coats maybe 5.

The only place where it is peeling is where I didn't sand the POR-15 down good enough before painting. (POR-15 self-levels and dries very very smooth and hard)

Otherwise no bubling or peeling yet (fingers crossed)

Cool. Definitely thinking this will be the way I go with mine.

Buddy and I experimented with the flat black this weekend and got okay results. Need to try bigger next time.

Thanks for all the answers and it still looks good man!
