Can they scan it from their car like they use radar?
I don't think so...I think it is a handheld device like they scan your driver's license with...I would think you would need a small chip to be able to do that...
Certain scanners could read a bar code on a plate from a decent distance but the bar code would have to be much bigger than the average UPC on a box of cereal.
I want to say it's Indiana but one of the states between Kentucky and Michigan has what I think are plastic, flat license plates now. See them from time to time. They are definitely flat and printed and do not look like metal.

I still have the personalized plate from 1986 that I had when my K5 was new.
The problem with that is its the personalized plate on my wifes suburban. I have had it sense I was 16.
Texas went to the cheap flat plates also.

for those of us who care what our trucks look like...I'd pay a little extra to get pressed license plates...if they would just offer them

The MI plates till last year will still stamped and had raised letters. Not sure about the new ones though. Its easier to see the plate number during the slush months with raised letters. Not so much with the flat plates.

Have the original cali plates for my blazer (plates stay with vehicle for life) , front ones still on the front and PA on the back

NY staties have a scanner in the car that can do your registration (in the window) as you go by. A lot better than the local cops who got in trouble for flashing the spotlight at people to see the color of their inspection sticker

Ca officers have scanners that read full plates super fast by just driving by. That's how they found my car after it was stolen. The officer said they have dedicated theft cars that just drive around known dumping areas for stolen cars and scan lots of license plates really fast. No bar code needed.
Yep. There was a wall street journal article recently about what to do with all this data.
Its a dash cam that reads and recognizes them. They say every license plate on the road is logged at least twice a month.
