Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

I believe it's so he can keep kai cool while he's working. Wouldn't be able to keep the back cool all day idling the truck.

correct... free AC voltage all day long.... not feasible to run the rig all day... and currently with the gasser, the AC doesn't even work.... not worth it till I drop in the 6BT...

the only thing is, I didn't plan on this originally.... certainly a pooch oversight on my part..

it sit's 12.5" high.. hopefully that works out ok with the B-hoop, spare and eventual lightbar... proportion-wise.... I'm certain the very middle of the lightbar will be blocked from the front.... but hopefully I can make it all look good...

They have non rooftop mounted units that are for campers and semis. It would take up a little space somewhere inside or under your bed but they aren't real big. I looked at one for my burb quite a while ago. They would normally mount in one of the small tool storage areas under the bunk in semis or one of the side door compartments on a camper....

yeah, I'm not an RV guy, but I install tons of pretty small AC unit's in the boats.. I just kind of had a pretty fixed idea for the floor area... not sure if I have interior space for an alternative... the only option would probably be something under the floor to the left or right, and than obviously the stowaway ramp becomes an issue.. something to look into tho, thanks, i'd much prefer to leave the roof as-is if I can.....

I vote figuring out another approach. Rig looks badass, rooftop ac just seems like it will look like an add on.

Have you checked out Red Dot? They do a lot of stuff for semis and other custom applications. Here's the catalog link http://cld.bz/abyYMy#62
I bet they have a smaller unit that would work but I am not sure if their units all have to have the engine running to run a compressor. Google search some 12volt a/c units, one that comes to mind when I used to work on semis is Webasto. They do 12 volt a/c units and also diesel fired 12 volt heaters. Run something like that and maybe a small solar panel to keep the batteries charged just like in a camp trailer.

sorry, missed this one... thanks for the link... :)

I'm definitely into doing an AC voltage unit... I have power everywhere at work and it's stoopid easy to stay plugged in all day...

Would it fit mounted to the back of the cab below the rear window on either side of the gas tank?

no, too small an envelope.... and honestly, I think all of the behind, cage-mount, etc ideas would look more hokey than the roof mount... I'm still not opposed to the roof mount, I honestly think I can make it blend well..... I think a tow lightbar would help mitigate any cosmetic look issue and break it all up..... proportion-wise...

that said, I am going to explore an "under-floor" avenue this winter.... have no clue at this point if it's feasible, but I have the winter to figure it out....

it sucks not running it mon thru fri, big time... I romp it religiously sat and sun.. turns heads every weekend at Depot, etc, but I miss DDing it big time...

How much do you love your passenger side seat? This came to mind because the passenger seat in the early Blazers was an option. Maybe you could make it work where the unit was removable and the seat put back in...for dates and stuff like that

Why don't you dd it again?

I will next year when the kennel and AC are done.... the dog needs AC during the day at the marina... so I use the pickup and he hangs in the back during the day with the portable AC unit...

Well that was one he!! of an adventure. Just finished reading through this whole thread. I love how Mutt turned out, I think it's really bada$$. I have been lurking on this board for some time now and when I came across this build I got really excited. I had read through some of your K5 thread a few years ago and I remembered that your work was top notch. Was also looking for ideas and inspiration for a flatbed for my '02 2500HD for which you did not disappoint.

Your speed and quality of work are truly inspiring. After reading through all of this I want to get back to working on my junk, ha.

Will you be bringing Mutt to the car show again this year? I would love to take the ride down and see this beast in person.

Now I'm off to the K5 thread and Kai's thread. Great looking pooch by the way.

thanks mang, really appreciate that.... :) props for plowing thru all the drivel.. ;)

unfortunately I wont be at the show this year, I plan to be back next year tho.... with Kai still being a pup (he says thanks btw), and Mutt being dirty and unchanged, I'm gonna take this year off... should be mostly done, other than the 6BT, this time next year..

but if you're ever in my area, feel free to stop by! just message me for a phone #/addy....

On the 6BT note, I have a friend that has a few sitting in his shop. I think they are a mix of 12 and 24 valve motors. I could see what he wants for them and let you know if you are interested.

I was down not far from your area last weekend for the Food Truck & Rock Carnival in Lakewood. Kept an eye out for Mutt in the parking lot thinking you might attend such and event. Dont really get down that way much, but if you ever need a hand I'd be happy to make the trip down to help out if need be.

I was thinking of going with 12v p-pump one.... that'd be awesome when ya see him next time...:)
