Ryoken's Guide to Rust Treatment and Bodywork 101

No dice...if anything all I did was create hammer marks...can't get the spoon wedged firm enough and don't have room for a 2x4...
guess I'll just have to mud it from the outside.
:doah:

slide hammer.. i'd say stud welder, but you've spent enough money... you can mig up the slide hammer holes when done...

I don't want to pull a high spot in it...just one hole per dent?

And...remove EDP before filler or just sand it?

oh, he!! no.. generally a hole every square inch or so.. you work the dent out from shallowest part first to deepest.. as your pulling out, tapping the perimeter crown helps...

grind, mig holes, grind, fair..

yes, you grind off EDP for filler...

No wonder my previous attempts with a slide hammer many years ago turned out terrible...I was trying to pull it out from the center with one hole...looked like a volcano....:doah:

Just curious...when do you determine that a dent is just as well fixed by using filler than going through the processes of pulling the metal out?
Is it a depth/thickness decision?

well, any time you can straighten metal to where you just need a skim coat, your much better off than straight out filling a dent..

not to mention as mentioned earlier, the metal has to go somewhere... most people see a dent, and automatically assume everything is low, and many times that is not the case...

I can't believe how expensive slide hammers are these days...wow..:eek1:

Chief, you don't have any trips south planned anytime soon do you?

For some reason I think you are above B'ham. If you were closer, I would meet you halfway and loan you my Chinese knockoff of a Portapower.

If it will fit, the spreader jaw would give you power behind that dent.

Its the duckbilled looking thing in this picture.

Its not as useful as it looks. Kind of bulky and does not have much power compared to the ram, but if you have the right job for it, its great.

That duck bill thing is really usefull, if you can think of things you can use it for.
I had a bolt I needed to losen, it was inside a frame with an opening enough to put my hand through and a wrench along the frame (boxed frame with windows in it), but not enough room to put some strength into it, I was able to slip that thing in there next to the wrench, and pump it up, to move the wrench, after 10 times the nut was lose enough and I was able to fit a ratchet and finish the job.
Not to mention how many times I used the rest of the kit for body work straightening frame, etc...
I have the 10 ton model.:waytogo:

This is one of those days where you look back and go...did I really just do that?

The passenger side quarter was a major ordeal to get off and when I did you can see it was ate up with rust...the inside bracing had let go of the outside metal...this panel is way worse than I ever thought it was.

The tailpan was kind of a nightmare...I couldn't figure out why the floor wouldn't come up and I eventually figured out that there were two rows of spot welds...had to loosen up all the body mount bolts...that was real fun...

That is intense! But at least your doing it man! And i know everyone here with rust thanks you for this thread!

Actually...that's not the inside brace that's rusted out on that quarter.....that's the actual original quarter panel outside....they welded a patch panel over top the outside of the panel without cutting the bad part out...which is what everybody thought to begin with...that's why the filler was an inch thick on the outside of the panel :doah:

And that Tail Pan was definitely warped...probably causing some issues on that left side quarter.

Btw save those 1/4s someone who's blazer is in a lot worse shape might want them.

Today, after 4 Advil, some stretching and much soreness....I guess I am going to bolt down the Tail Pan and weld the floor back down to it.

I need something that will grind inside those narrow valleys in the floor without having to angle the edge of a flat wheel in there...it just cuts swirl marks...need something that grinds flat and even.

Where do I stand to take the least impact if the welder ignites the gas tank? :eek1: :doah:
