Ryoken's Guide to Rust Treatment and Bodywork 101

DON'T WELD ANYTHING YET... you need to slow down, your gonna get yourself in trouble...

prep all your areas and parts, B-pillar, rear floor, etc, grind boogers, blast, weld thru primer, etc......

than put the tailpan in unwelded and leave the mount bolts loose... than loosely bolt the qrters in..

not sure i understand what your talking about with the grinder.. almost all grinding is done at something of an angle.. what setup are you using?

I got the 4 1/2 inch angle grinder and the die grinder...both have to be "tilted into" the valley...which makes swirl rings...

what kind of discs, pads are you using? it's a grinder, not a sander, don't just lean into it and wail, if you use a light touch, it can be done with a variety of grinders, from a stone wheel to 2" rolocs...

I got a stone wheel, roloc wheels, flap wheel...

I bent the floor in some places, especially the outer lip...I need to tap those back down...

Also, how loose do I make the tailpan bolts? Finger tight or some real slop?

real slop on every bolt, except the body mount bolts... those you want movement but they can have the slop taken out, whereas all the smaller bolts everywhere else, just get them started solidly a few threads...

I got a question about the B pillar and I am not sure I have the photos to illustrate what I am asking...

Remember how the rear door gap between the door and the quarter was huge and it was worse at the top than the bottom.

Is it possible that the upper B Pillar needs to be maybe pushed forward a little up top? How would I know...how do I check square...is the B Pillar supposed to be exact 90 degrees to the rocker portion of the door jamb...or can you use the floor as the reference....not knowing if the floor is completely flat accurate?

the bottom of the b-pillar and the height of the tailpan will dictate the door gap...

that basically becomes the pivot point for the qrters... with the tailpan height being the movement... get everything cleaned up and prepped, than everything loosely bolted in place....

Got to go buy some plastic if I am going to be blasting today...don't want to get sand all over the primed front end...I also need to rig up a cardboard box or something to act as a backstop while blasting those B Pillars....

yup, tarp that b*tch off...

I also got brand new neighbors to the left and he spent all day yesterday washing and detailing their 3 cars and trucks....not going to be a happy camper or neighborly welcome if the wind is blowing in that direction....oh well...what do ya' do?

Rather then blasting why not use a drill with a wire brush to remove the rust?

No progress today...I over did it yesterday...worked all day without stopping, got dehydrated and almost passed out and had cramps all night.

Today it is so humid, I stepped out there for a while and got dizzy again and nearly threw up...I am going to take it easy today...

I have to go to the orthopedic doc tomorrow for my shoulder...what do you guys do that work around metal all the time and have to get an MRI...I am afraid that there will be little metal shavings in my ears and maybe stuck in my back and skin from laying on the driveway....then the MRI machines powerful magnet will pull it through you like shrapnel....

make sure to tell your doctor of metal potentially being in you... eyes are the big one they worry about..
