Ryoken's Guide to Rust Treatment and Bodywork 101

The appeal went out to LMC to replace the passenger side quarter panel.

They had me send pictures and said it would be probably Wednesday before the decision would be made.

They are very likely having a look at this thread and the photos.

We will see how good their customer service is...if they make good on that panel, that will be outstanding.

Update: I was contacted today by LMC, saying my case and photos were being sent to Customer Service for review and it could take up to 7 days.

I'm so sorry I've been negligent to your thread.... :doah: I will try to go back and look at the prior posts/pictures and give you my thoughts when I can...

as you know, I've been a bit preoccupied the last couple weeks...

I'd be curious to know if any replacement panels they have will be any different than yours. They might all be off.

can you move the tank some and thus move the filler neck?

Problem isn't with the filler movement...it's with the filler hole placement in the big hole and the vent pipe...mostly the vent pipe since that is what is "in the way" of getting the filler tube toward the back of the truck.

btw - in the pics, the yellow paint. Is that the zinc phosphate or is that the primer over the zinc phosphate.

ah- I answered my own question. The green is the zinc and the yellow is the primer. What are you using for the yellow primer?

the "yellow" stuff is actually Nason 2k "Buff" primer which is sprayed over the green zinc chromate.

Drivers side quarter just won't match up at the botom no matter what I have tried:

Regardless of what LMC does, I can still work on this drivers side panel...I would love to get this one side set...What can I do to help get the bottom of this panel to match the curve of the rocker?
It would seem to simple...if there is room to push it in and it won't go in then something is wrong....

Man this is frustrating. I just so badly want to see this work out for you! After all this effort you deserve to have a perfect blazer.

it's not uncommon at all to need to trim down door flanges and such on an aftermarket panel... take a compass and use it as a scribe in the jam to mark an even trim line down that flange...

wazzabie.... chromate, not phosphate....

I just read this whole thread today, as I am planning on diving into my truck this summer...

First off, let me just say it took me about 6 hours to read the whole damn thing :haha:

Next, Ryoken, as I have said before, you are the freakin man. All of CK5 appreciates the input you and others have in helping us lesser talented guys out.

Third, Chief you are awesome. Reading the first page, I wasn't too sure what to expect, but throughout this thread it has become readily apparent that your skills, attention to detail, and habits have greatly improved. All I can say is that I hope you get all of this worked out, and the Blazer rides again soon!

I don't think that the flange on the upper part is the cause...I could be wrong, but it more seems like maybe it is at the very bottom where the 90 degree piece meets the rocker...

I should be able to "push it flush" by hand or with my heel, but it's almost like there is something behind it that won't allow it...yet I don't see anything.

If you remember, even the oem panel had this issue...although it was not original....it pooched out at the bottom like this...wonder if the B Pillar brace needs to be hammered?

could you trim the original panel were the gap is wide?

Maybe the lower pillar was replaced with aftermarket? Was the outer skin on the passengers rear quarter original or replaced?

Hey Chief, mine did the same thing. Like Paul said, just scribe it out. I just used a flap wheel where it was too tight. Massaged it down some to where the lip is "almost" the same reveal all the way down. You should be able to push the bottom in after you take some meat out of the tight area.

Chief, I have had problems "like" this many times before. Never had a body panel that would not fit, because I have never replaced a body panel like you are doing. But many times had parts that should fit but something seemed to be holding it back.

You need to make another stab at trying to find what is holding you off. It can be done.
If you cannot force it, then you have to go the other way.
Try pushing it gently and repeatedly until it hits, let it move back and do it again.
If it makes a noise when it hits, try to tell where that noise is coming from.

I have a bright penlight that often helps more than a big light. It lets me illuminate just certain areas and ignore others.
And look into dark areas without being dazzled by a big light.

Due to the stiffness of the panel, what is holding you off can be a considerable distance from where you are trying to get it together.

You can also try looking across the surface of the panel when you push it to see if a part of it bulges out from something underneath.
