I lucked out and had a foot of 7/8" alum kicking around.. think it may have been flagpole leftovers.. drove me nuts all the handle components where 3/4" and floppy as aunt Esters boobs...

$3 in broom holders....

So if you were to build one for sale what would you need to price it?

too much... ;) all kidding aside... with the costs of steel these days, and me being slow, probably not cost-effective...

if I was gonna buy metal and do it again, I would change up a couple material dimensions.... it's a bit overkill....

but overall I'm VERY pleased considering it was schtuff I had laying around, other than the posts.....

yeah, I certainly can't compete.. they charge $150 to weld one together.. lazer cut, yada... I probably have 20 hrs cutting/shaping/fitting/burning that up... let alone steel costs...

I'm also guessing, maybe, they use different steel for the fingers? maybe sumfin hardened.. maybe not tho, I've seen zero deformity from the 1/2 dozen bends I've made..

I just thought it would be something I could make on the cheap and put my twist on....

anyway.... here's a last clip done.. same 1/4" x 3" stuff.....

but yeah, for anyone with some reasonable tools, and I don't know, $120 to $175 in materials, depending on your situation... and a "not so anal" 5 to 10 hrs labor for a functional unit? definitely a good DIY project IMO...

oh, and just as an additional note, or eleven... in the course of the last few weeks, I've learned I'm glad I never put a door/lid on that back compartment.. been tossing in/taking out hunks O' steel all week... it'd be a pain with a door.. especially being on the backside.. tho, the open front is the way to go for foot placement, etc... #lazinessFTW "homer woot" :woot:

constempating what to do about a knob for the jack... there are quite a few options from easy peezy, to overly german engineered..... we'll see.. definitely needs to be done in some form.... and the last mod I think for the press.. the winch/rope worked out badarse...

just checked my Atlas/Crapsman parts collection.. do NOT have any type of knurler for the lathe to turn my own.. not too mention, I don't have a hunk of alum to do it with.. we'll see... I'm looking to actually turn a part with that thing..... been back shopping used lathe accessory stuff the last couple days... I really have an infatuation and want a damn Bridgeport! ;)

gonna keep plowing thru LAB™ projects, till I feel organized... than maybe I'll play with some Mutt projects when it warms a bit... about to get stormed reasonable sat I hear...

prologue #3

a more down and dirty, quicker, build approach would be to just run nuts/bolts thru the pinch joint, than weld the nuts to the back... as opposed to tapping the back plate... just as functional, albeit cruder......

threading the plat is much classier

Mutt's entire bed is 3/8-16.. :pimp1:

I had 4 used taps in stock.. :haha: and a new Irwin in the pack! :woot: I did break a used one tho.. :doah: even with my sweet Lisle tap sockets....

I swear I want a crazy, Tap-Matic™ chuck for the drill-press.. they're stoopid cool.. and stooopid expensive... :eek1:

think I may start messing with a new vertical feed plate for the bandsaw tomorrow..

thanks... it's all about avoiding a trainwreck... :haha: :doah:

I have to make myself slow down at times... "no, no, make it fit right", "nows the time", etc... take the extra mockup steps, fixturing, yada... otherwise ya end up with a warped thing that don't work for chit... :doah: trust me, i've done it to myself...

surprisingly this thing works flawless... I think the key was the welded washers on the tubes.. at just the one end... and luckily my pole install idea really seemed to work good.... no bind whatsoever..

down making the bandsaw table now.... just drilling it and countersinking... i ended up using 1/4" alum.. 10" x 10"..... pics later...

So true. If you haven't time to do it right the first time, you will never have time to do it right a second time.

ok, banged out the table.. came out sweet..

and was stooopid simple to make for a change..... :haha:

tho, it reminded me, while I have a fair amount of countersinks, the majority don't cut for chit anymore... :doah:

Now it's time to start facing on that orange thing in the back ground

it's funny you say that.... while i have no plans to actually work on it, I do plan to thoroughly clean it and cover it over the next month or so as part of The LAB™ cleanup.... it really just needs $$$ thrown at it now...

I've got a few Mutt projects in the works when the weather breaks a tad... tho I'm taking a few days here now... tweaked my rotator cuff pretty bad yesterday heatin/beatin my neighbors plow on his rig... feeling it today...

good thing I finished all these up.. fugged up my shoulder bad.... should prolly be in a sling.. I'm done other than light duty fartin around till I go back to work mar 15.... took all summer for that to "kind of get back to normal", now i'm back as bad, or worse, than I was last spring... fug my life... I forget i'm an old battered POS and start doing chit i did in my 30's..

alright, to finish the build off I spent a couple hrs this afternoon on the last mods...

bored out an old spicket handle and plug welded it in.... wanted to clearance the pump for finger room while spinning... seen guys cut windows, shave, etc.. i said fug it and just lopped off the front... threw a little Ryo red on the handle too for a personal touch.......

threw a couple quick coats of argent on the pump to ditch the yellow... she's done..... other than possibly dedicated brake pin holes.. but I'll have to be pretty bored to do that......... ;)
