Salvaged fresh from the trees, now what?

Hey everyone... Thanks for putting together a great forum.

I'm a complete noob and just pulled my first K5 out from the trees at a farm. It's going to be a project that my brother, dad, and I can work on. We lucked out and got it running, but it sounds like complete crap and barely moves after we aired up the tires.

I'm going to change the oil and spark plugs, pour in some sea foam, replace the carb fuel filter, air filter, and battery.

What else should I do for a pine tree fresh Blazer? I'm looking for tips since I'm learning as I go. Any help would be pleasant and I'll include some pics really soon of us putting it on the trailer.

Thanks.

Test compression before you purchase all those parts. You may need the money for a rebuild.

They are already purchased... Am I screwed? I'll make sure that I keep the receipt. Another completely newbie question... how do I test compression?

You can purchase or maybe even rent a cylinder compression guage from part stores or a tool shop. Im not sure of the adaquit amount of compression you would be lookin for but the gurus here should be able to enlighten you.
Thats just the first thing I would check. Tune up would help significantly but, your not going to achieve what you want without compression.

Pictures would be the first thing....

Then drop 5K into a strong motor, and put it on 42's...But in all reality go through and check all fluids, brakes, seals, RUST. And just tend to what is the most important. IE brakes> lift/tires... In the long run atleast.:doah:

Yes... I'll definitely check the AT Fluid, I had thought of that earlier this afternoon but forgot.

When do I get permission to post pictures? Do I have to get approval or make a certain amount of posts?

Once the engine is running, I'm also wondering what direction I should go with the Blazer. I'm up for suggestions.

$25 on AT Fluid or a Compression tester or a tank of propane and book of matches.:D

Here are some pics of the K5 as we found it.

There is a pic of the 350. One point of interest is the compressor mounted on top. It doesn't have a belt running to it but I'm pretty sure its for A/C. But I think it's a Dealer install. Maybe some one can shed some light on it.

Got it on the trailer under it's own power and maybe I should have driven straight to the salvage yard.

Its a York and its aftermarket keep it on there they make good onboard air compressors

The $25 is for a membership here so you can see and do more and get more info and from the looks of the blazer's rust your going to need alot of help :D

On Board Air is a great idea... I'll try and figure that out after I get tires of any value on there. I'm pretty sure the compressor turns freely, if it was stuck I'd take it off.

The amount of rust I have is definitely going to limit what I do with the Blazer. I have seen some fiberglass replacement panels, but no replacement door frame/floors, yet.

Took the cowl cover off and cleaned all of the crap out of there. I think the mouse was pissed off but I'm sure that he lives behind the dash somewhere.

Changed the oil, plugs, and filters. Poured a can of SeaFoam in the tank and fired her up. The truck ran surprisingly smooth, so I topped off the radiator and power steering fluid. I got adventurous so I took it out on the road for a bit. It shifted through all three gears and did a 3 point turn ok. The next thing might be to check out the transmission because even though the fluid level was fine, it smelled funny.

What should be next on my check list?

#1. Membership to COK5
#2. Shop manual (which kind, Chiltons or something else?)
#3. Transmission supplies
#4. Shocks for front and rear
#5. Seat Belts
#6. Remove old CB Speaker and lame fog lights from front.

What do you think?

How'd the trans fluid look? Probably should change it.. if the truck has been sitting it could have collected moisture in it(much like your oil can).
