School me on light duty 5 speeds from IFS rigs.

Yeah. A T5 is a car transmission. It was also used in S10 Blazers and pickups. I don't believe it was ever used in a full size. They have a separate bellhousing like a traditional manual transmission.

Not all T5's are that way, ford versions have integral bells

I have a '91 S10 with the 4.3 and that hm290 (always thought it was a 3500 until a couple weeks ago) and they have over 200K hard miles on them. I used to BEAT on that trans, day in and day out... never had a single issue with it. The 4.3 actually died first, probably from over revving it numerous times over the years.

At any rate, I realize this is in an abused little pickup with a 4.3, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work just as well in a full size that isn't beat so hard.

T5s never came in a full size. The Wikipedia article is pretty accurate. The T5 and NV3500 are VERY different as far as construction goes.

I know the difference between a t-5 and NV3500 lol what I was asking is how close is the HM290 to a T-5 as I said above I've seen in print it referred to as a T-5 in fullsize
