School me on Rockwells.

Since I started the thread, do I have any baby mod rights to it? Like, the 53s on 10 bolts isn't funny, and you're wasting space in a thread I hoped would be useful. We get it guys. It was a little bit funny when the first guy posted it. Go pick on a n00b or something.

Hang on while I get my shades...I had lazer eye surgery a couple years ago and now my eyes are sensitive to BLING. :D :wink1:

I almost like the ratty crewcab. Looks like mine 'cept mine's a dooly.

u-joint rockwells are awesome.

Pros:

6.72 gears
very high pinion
ultra beefy housings
big stock shafts (1.6", 16 spline) and capable of up to 2", 47 spline

cons:

heaaaavy
top loading diff / high pinion can be a pita to fit into a sane-height truck
stock shafts are brittle as all get out compared to modern stuff
wider than some people want their rig

Ouverson is the master of all things Rockwell. I'd love to have a rig with rockies and 47-spline 4340 shafts in it. bling! Randy has some guys running 1000+ hp and 66s with no failures. yikes.

Dont forget one of the abother big con....brake setup. Pinion mounted brakes are easiest and least expensive option, but no way you could drive it on the street like that. ouverson has a conversion for dana 60 brakes I believe they also have another setup option for wheel mounted brakes also.

Here you go....all inclusive information for rockwell axles in offroad trucks...http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=313836 :thumb:

you can flip the hub around on a rockwell to get a narrower track width

There are two companies I have seen making hub mounted disc brake kits for them as well as an eight lug conversion kit to run more wheel choices. I don't remember any of this stuff being anywhere near the realm of cheap though

my goal years ago before nj changed their lift laws was rocks and 53's... some day... some day :doah:

anywhoo... here is another thought... why 53's?
to look cool or to acutally plan on submerging them?

you could do 44's with unimog axles and you will have TONS of ground clearance.....

Rocks and 53s are cheap and easy. For go, not show. Don't get me started on show trucks.... :D

I have a shop to do my own fab/machine work...prolly be a trailer queen. My CC won't be getting them, it will be another rig. Maybe my old J**P.
