quickest thing, look at the back side of the webbing underneath the diff. Should be a number 60 cast into it. If it says 61.... I don't want to say walk away, but I wouldn't pay $600 for a 61 myself. They are a slight pain to deal with gearing wise. There was a recent post about it on here, where a member installed gears in his "dana 60" only to discover the ring and pinion didn't even contact each other, turned out it was a 61.
As for the HP carrier thing, yes the carrier is the same between an HP and an LP, but the gears are completely different. Teeth are cut the opposite direction of the LP. There are thick gearsets available for the HP, where as there are not for the LP(why I have NO idea whatsoever). I have thick 5.13s for my HP and thick 5.13s for my 14 bolt. Sure is nice to not have to buy a new carrier
