quickest thing, look at the back side of the webbing underneath the diff. Should be a number 60 cast into it. If it says 61.... I don't want to say walk away, but I wouldn't pay $600 for a 61 myself. They are a slight pain to deal with gearing wise. There was a recent post about it on here, where a member installed gears in his "dana 60" only to discover the ring and pinion didn't even contact each other, turned out it was a 61.

As for the HP carrier thing, yes the carrier is the same between an HP and an LP, but the gears are completely different. Teeth are cut the opposite direction of the LP. There are thick gearsets available for the HP, where as there are not for the LP(why I have NO idea whatsoever). I have thick 5.13s for my HP and thick 5.13s for my 14 bolt. Sure is nice to not have to buy a new carrier :)

I don't think I can take another sob story about someone who found a killer deal on "insert part here" but didn't secure the deal with any cash....and when they went back, it was sold to someone else.

gears could be swaped in too, so you never know. definelty look for casting marks.
 
Be very wary of this "deal". I'm not aware of any GM trucks having a 3.54 ratio. The 3-series ratios jumped from 3.07 to 3.42 to 3.73. Perhaps there were some oddball ratios available on the duallies, because of the Dana axles at both ends, but I've never heard of it. Be sure that you know what you're getting before parting with hard earned ca$h. :)
 
Well I got my dana 60 today and it is a chevy checked to bom# and its from a 84-87 k30 and only paid $600:D :D :D :D :D
 
I dont understand the gear ratio the numbers on the ring are 5 039 3 dana d 32503 p8l691 46 13 and on the other side 784 sorry for the newbie question.But according to the bom#its supposed to have 3.73 gears.
