Seized oil filter

ryokens $.02....

I'll bring up this point, from a guy who did 2 BB oil changes today.. :haha:

one thing to keep in mind, is tools that crush filters, the above claw, and the various plier ones, commit's you on a path...

tho I do use a variety of pliers, ex large to small, for everything from big Mann dizzles to tiny filters on an Onan gen set... and I do have 2 sizes of the jaw ones, by far, what i use most often are a quality band one, and I must do 300 merc oil filters a year.. I have about 5 of em in various sizes, but 2 for the standard chevy filters...

there can be a BIG advantage to the band ones.... it is MUCH more difficult to deform the filter, whereas the others automatically start crushing it... and yes, of course I've seen filters you rip off to the base and get it spinning with chisel/hammer, C4, etc.... but those are time intensive/money losing jobs...

just trying to say that keeping the filter pretty intact can be a big advantage doing filters.....

Yes I agree 100%, I always start out with the band wrench at the base. Then I will move onto the claw as last resort. Like you mentioned, you are fully committed as soon as you do the first turn.

had a dmax filter 1 time on so hard took 2 guys to get it. 1 on the big clamp plyers and me on the big jaw setup with 12" long ratchet handle on it.

we even moved the truck on the lift pads a tiny bit . ( that was scary ) and it finaly come loose but still took almost to full turns to get it to spin by hand.

and i have found 3 major reasons why thay get so tight .

dumb ass puts on with wrench :doah:

no oil film on the oring and dry block surface melts/bonds oring to it.

and tend to see tighter filters on high vibration running engines like diesel motors.

yeah, with the boats, salt corrosion, etc, I've seen some pretty f*cked filters on poor maintenence boats.... than ya get spin-on transmission ones that noone has done in like 20 yrs.... :eek1:

I've certainly seen and done my share of ripping filters down to the base, I avoid it like the plague...

the claw is the ****, i work at a dealership ( not in the lube rack tho) couldn't get this damn filter off a 3.8 to save my life. asked the tech i work with if he had any more ideas before i crushed it, he handed me the claw, end of story...

i've had to use it a few times since then also, something about the way it grabs evenly and it gets tighter on the filter the tighter you turn it..

i dont have any special tools like the claw dealy.ive always done the screwdriver trick and if that didnt work tear off the outer shell and hammer and chisel.way too many people think the filter has to be on super tight to seal and torque the hell out of it only to find out they cant get it off themselves the next time for a change.i went to a quick lube place and they couldnt get the filter off.i went out there myself and got it off for them.so much for that place.haha.paul i want to see the c4 method as well.thatd be a show and a half:popcorn:.

Hold the filter tight and unscrew the truck from the filter. It comes off much easier that way  :haha:
