Updating and improving a military M1008
If I got the 5 year collector plates then no emissions ever.
Another option in Colorado for I believe vehicles 50 years old or more is Horseless Carriage plates. For my 53 Bel Air it is $12.67 for 5 years. No emissions ever. Kinda weird in that they have a set 5 year period. The new session starts on Jan 1st. If you apply for a new HC plate anytime during the next 5 years it still expires on Dec 31 2024.

These changes do not apply to military vehicles that are valued for historical purposes. Those that are maintained, marked as previously used by the military and privately owned and maintained for their historical value can still be titled, licensed and driven on public streets in Colorado and you don't have to bolt license plates on them as it distracts from their military appearance.

What you are missing is the new law came in after the old law that allows them to run with no plates. The new law has this verbiage:

These changes do not apply to military vehicles that are valued for historical purposes.

But the law itself does not list how or who determines the historical value.

As stated earlier the DMV has a system change in place that flags the military vehicles during the registration process. With nothing written into the law it's open to interpretation of what the DMV person at the time feels is ok or not. We all know what DMV clerks are like and asking for something outside the norm will be met with resistance in most cases. So they will probably just call it as black or white, it's a military vehicle so no registration for you.

Plus the other issue is, at least for used CUCV trucks and Blazers is how many got repurposed after military service and lost the camo and other marks that identify it as a CUCV. Take a CUCV into the DMV and ask them to register and it's NOT camo then watch their head explode out of confusion.

This law is a bad deal all the way around. What's really crappy is SEMA supported this bill up to the point that the sneaky politicians changed the statement on on/off highway in mid stream. As soon as it got changed SEMA dropped it like a hot rock. I have not looked to see if SEMA is working to fight the new law though.

But they do apply to military vehicles if you read the DMV memo. Look at the bottom.

"Historical military vehicles are not to be titled or registered "

@Capt Ron There doesn't seem to be much difference between Collector and Horseless Carriage plates. Both are 5 year. The vehicle needs to be 32 years old for Collector plates vs 50 on the Horseless Carriage. If the vehicle is 1975 and older, there is no emissions required. My 69 Camaro would qualify the the HC plates but can't stand red plates on a blue car. Not sure what the difference in cost is. My Camaro and both trucks wasn't that expensive on the Collector plates.

The HC plates do have these rules:
.Vehicles bearing the Horseless Carriage plate have several restrictions about where and when on streels and highways they rnay be driven. Statutes 42-12-ffi2 (1) (e) (2), and 42-12-301 (5) provide that they may be driven:
a) To all meetings and assemblies where such vehicles and their ownership is of prirnary interest.
b) For special occasions such as parades or demonstrations.
c) When the vehicle will not constitute a tratfic hazard.
d) To, from and during local, state, or national tours held for the exhibition and enjoyment of vehicles.

So if I'm driving to it to my work on a nice day, its not legal?

Yea the major difference is just the cost. I have Collector plates on my 67 El Camino and 1930 Dodge. I bought them before I knew about the HC plates. For the 5 year renewal on them they are both around $260.00 ish. I know what you mean about the red plates but if I can save $240.00 I will look the other way on the color especially considering my vehicles "patina" .

If memory serves correctly the Classic plates have many of the same driving restrictions but somehow  I always seem to on my way to a "car show/demonstration".

My 69 Camaro was $237 for 5 years so thats 47 per year. I think the 23 T-bucket was less. I get what you're saying about saving money though. The collector plates can be driven anywhere. The only rule is 4500 miles per year. The funny thing is they never ask what the mileage is so how would they know how many miles you drive?

Started looking for a CUCV this week, re-read your build. Pretty cool truck!

Thanks! They are getting harder to find and the values keep going up especially with the lower miles trucks. I may have to let this one go soon to make room for another truck. I have one buyer that is considering $10k but I'm not holding my breath. I may have better luck at Gateway Classics which sells world wide and just sold my 69 Camaro for what I wanted. 57k original miles on it so it has that going for it. I know you can find them in stock form that needs some TLC much cheaper but getting more rare.

I've been on the fence about this for awhile now. It was time to put the truck up for sale. I realize its a little high for a M1008 but keep in mind the dealer is getting $4.5k from this if it sells.

To tow my sled trailer up the mountains, I really needed more power and overdrive. If I add a turbo, I will likely take out the 6.2 head gaskets and it will be limited on power. Cummins is the cheapest engine option but still at least $5k plus my time and all the extra crap that it will require. Getting a 4L80e adds even more to that cost. Instead of sinking more money into it, I decided it was easier and cheaper to get a low mileage gas truck that can still pull well. This also keeps the truck more original and sometimes more valuable to collectors.

What rear springs are 58" ?

And whats a @wd steering box ?
Thats the 58" f150 rear springs I did. Rides softer in the back. I wish I kept the original 1 ton springs but like an idiot I gave them away.

They made SO many mistakes in that classified. I already sent them a correction but nothing got fixed yet. All they had to do is copy and paste what I sent them. Looks like a 3rd grader did that!

That’s a really nice truck.

From what I’ve seen lately you might get your asking price.
Thanks! Yeah from what I've been seeing lately, the prices on these square body trucks and K5's are going through the roof. The dealer thinks it will go fast. Time will tell. If not, I get it back in 3 months and I can list it myself. It was free consignment so its actually kind of nice to keep it at a dealer under a roof. Plus this makes more room in my driveway for the other truck I just bought. Its not a GM truck but I couldn't beat the price of $10k. 2012 Ram 2500 4x4 SLT with 74k.

Do you know if Colorado has changed their policy on licensing military vehicles?

I can never get a straight answer on this. I "think" if your CUCV is already registered, you might be ok. If you need a title/registration then you might be screwed. I still had a year left on my 5 year plates. Every time I asked someone at the DMV, they said it should be ok to register it. I can't find anyone who has registered a CUCV lately to verify.
