Sergeant Steel

Updating and improving a military M1008
Got the bench seat re-upholstered. Not bad for my first time ever re-doing a seat with pre-made kit from LMC. My only regret is I did not order the replacement foam from LMC. My old 1986 factory foam is ok but I think over time its lost some size so the LMC cover was a little loose. I tried to fix that by putting a 2" foam piece on the bottom but now I sit a little taller in the truck and the seat does not like to tilt without some effort. So if you want to do the same, I'd suggest getting the bottom replacement foam. The top piece was in good shape and I just slid the new cover over the factory vinyl. I also added some seat heaters but they still need to be wired up.

Kevin Tetz and LMC did a really nice how to video on this that made it pretty simple.

Brackets and all the hog rings need to come off on the bottom. You can see the seat back is in nice shape so the vinyl cover was left on.

Can you tell the original vinyl was left under it? I was thinking of doing the same for my truck. The seats are decent but I wasn't sure if it would be obvious that I just slipped it over the original slick vinyl.

Christine is going to be pissed when she see's you took the comforter off the bed for your little project.

You wouldn't be able to tell if you left the bottom or back vinyl on. It covers everything.

After looking at the cost for the bottom foam $250 I'd suggest doing 1" foam in the bottom instead of 2" if you're trying to save money.

Yeah, I'm in. Digging the hell out of the truck, and glad Dr. There's-a-Comma-in-my-Horsepower-Rating is a member of the 6.2 crowd, if only temporarily.

Upgraded the headlights. Found some 5x7 LED Daymakers on Amazon for $91 shipped. These have the 2017 new generation Osram chips which are pretty bright. 5800 lumens for high beam and 3800 lumens for low beam. Did a very light black out on the turn signals to match. Night driving is so much better now!

Next up- upgrading the chrome aftermarket light with some square LED lights and light bar.

Yeah, I may go with the cheaper 6.2 mods first then I may go turbo. For now, I'm enjoying it and is ok power wise for city driving.

Might have to try those out, they look like a decent cheaper option.

Same thing as the more expensive Truck-Lite brand. I didn't want to spend much on these and the light output is SO much better over stock halogens. There's many options out there. I'd suggest looking at the Lumen output. These had the most compared to other LED lights.

I have a good friend that works on the AIRFORCE base locally in the motor pool. I have been hounding him to get me some of the LED 24v off-road lights they run on the HUMMWV's around here. He has four on his farm truck and they are ridiculously bright and efficient. He only uses the truck for plowing snow and if he keeps on taunting me with them I'm gonna take them off and use them on my truck and let him get some more for himself...LOL. He is truck is a CUCV that is still 24v.

My truck is still factory military 12/24 volt system but the headlights only use 12v. You'd have to do some wiring with some relays and connect them directly to the 24v bus bar. Same thing with brights. I'd assume that would work but not 100% relays would handle the 12/24v properly.

Performing a proctology exam before installing headlights?

You must be interested since this sparked your interest. Come on over dude. My doctor rates are very reasonable.
So I've been told. :eek1:

Decided to go crossover steering. Although the stock steering wasn't bad driving on the street, there's always the lack of turning radius in parking lots and tight trails. ORD steering arm, ARP studs, and ORD draglink was used. Also got ORD drag link ends which are better than the standard ES2234R and ES2010L ends. 2WD C10 gear box came from Advance Auto with a 30% off coupon. Brought the price down to 100 bucks so not a bad deal. At the same time, I installed the ORD steering box brace to avoid any future frame cracks.

Replaced door panels and sun visors with black. Old burgandy panels were pretty faded. Although clear coat can bring them back to life, I prefer the black color with the olive drab. The old sunvisors where pretty beat from the sun. That was a job to get them off the steel rod! Visor brackets were painted black to match.

Also replaced the worn out weather strip around the doors. It was so bad the doors rattled badly and now they are solid with the new seals. You can see the difference old vs new.
