Sergeant Steel

Updating and improving a military M1008
Got a tilt column with delayed wiper option installed today. Unfortunately the dimmer rod is not moving and my brights won't come on. Will have to troubleshoot.

Replaced the dash with a Raybuck (Dashes Direct) Fitment was ok, not the best. I give it a 7 out of 10.

Old dash with cover. You can see how bad the original dash was.

Also cleaned up the cluster and did LED's.

I put LEDs in my gauges and I hate them. They are too bright and they don't work with the dimmer on the headlight switch. I could buy a dimmer module from Autometer but I don't really want to wiring up and add yet another thing to the dash. I already hate how much wiring the sockets require for the gauges.

@Shawn do those Sylvania bulbs dimmer with the dimmer on the headlight switch?

Yeah I'll have to do some checking. I agree on the really bright dash lights. I'm always turning them down at night in my newer vehicles.

There should be 5 for the cluster and one for the HVAC panel

Been having some vibration issues with the 6.2 diesel and I'm running out of ideas.

Last week I replaced the motor mounts. Vibration still there. Today I replaced the harmonic balancer and still have some good vibration while in drive and at a stop. In park or neutral, its a little better, not as bad as in drive. At a light its so annoying I have to shift to neutral for the majority of the noise to go away.

The harmonic balancer (HB) was more work than I expected. My HB installer did not have the stock crank size threaded tip. Drove to 4 different auto parts stores and NONE of them had the correct M16x1.5 tip for their HB installer. All they had was M16x2.0 thread in their installers. Went to 2 hardware stores looking for a longer M16 crank bolt. Nope. Finally decided to try and weld to the stock M16 crank bolt to another like Fluidamper shows in their instructions. unfortunately, my 120v welder really sucks at the larger chunks of metal and the bolts ended up coming apart when I tried to install the HB. Could have used my arc welder but I was missing my welding rods. I finally just drilled a smaller 7/16 hole in the old crank bolt, tapped it, and used a the SBC tip of the HB install tool and it worked with no issue. Also, the crank pulley was filled with dirt on the inside where its a V shape groove. Got all the dirt out and cleaned it up.

So at this point I'm so close to taking it someone to see if they can figure out why this truck is still vibrating at idle. Hopefully its not something internal to the engine. So far I tried new Napa motor mounts, new Dorman HB, and I made sure nothing is hitting frame or body. I'm going to double check the flex plate has the weight on it since the 6.2 is externally balanced. The transmission mounts look good but I do have some poly mounts I can try to see if it helps. Maybe its my crank pulley but it doesn't look bent. I'm at a loss. Has anyone had this issue?

Not 6.2 balancing but my big block needed a certain flexplate. It would smooth out at speeds but would shake at idle. My motor was misidentified so it had the wrong plate on it. It also made it leak out of the rear main it was so bad.

Yeah I'm going to double check the weight is there since its an external balance engine. Not sure if I can pull off the flex plate part number but thats another thing to check for to be sure its the right one. The other thing I'm going to check for is a bad injector which can cause this. I read you can use an infrared temp gauge and looking for cylinders that are cooler than others.

The vibration is more harmonic. It rattles things like the dash, bed, gas cover, door internals, etc. Its just annoying sitting at the light and its a total rattle trap.

Yes temp gun will tell you if you have a miss but it can be tough because any little change in where you point it on the manifold can change the temp reading. Not sure how they are on a 6.2 but you can crack the fuel lines on mechanical diesel engines at the injectors to also to do a cylinder cutout and check for a misfire.

Got the m1008 painted today and it turned out great using rattle cans. Ordered 12 cans of Green 383 and have less than 1 can left so good guess. Still need to install the painted mirrors and clean off the windows. I tried the green camo Rustoleum paint at Walmart but it was too dark and the other brand Krylon at the Auto Parts stores has too much gray. But this green 383 paint from Rapco is perfect and matches well. Also installed a new hood since mine had many dings in it. It had some good surface rust I had to sand down.

Looks great!

How did you like the rapco cans? I heard they could be a pain to deal with sometimes. plugging up nozzles and what not

Not too bad. They included 2 nozzles in each can but never had an issue with clogging. One can wanted to spray large dots randomly. Tried to change nozzles but still had the issue. I used that can to paint the lower rockers so it worked out.
