So today I took my truck out for the first time before I start taking everything apart.this is the first time i a truck with such low gearing and I love it.if I'm driving in town and hit a red light and stop can i start off in 2nd cause it is geared low or do I have start off in 1st.

They call it granny low because granny can walk faster than the truck can actually move in that gear. :D

1st is down and left.

I disagree. I don't care if the knob says L-1-2-3-R. Nobody calls the 465 a 3 speed with granny low. If it has 4 forward gears, its a 4 speed.

To me, 2nd gear is down and left.

Yep is left and down=2nd
The tag says ratio =196
Date=8-30-76

yup, 4 spd...

heck, your barely in 2nd when starting out, your into 3rd at 10 mph around town.. you can roll and start out in 3rd easy enough too.

I've been driving Mutt for about 4 months now, and I don't think I've used 1st yet... :haha:

That's some funny $hit ryoken:haha:
I think I will just romp through the gears just pissoff the people nextdoor.
They don't like me up all night working on the truck.city sucks can't wait to move.

I swear, it's like a 2 1/2 speed!!! :haha:

it's makinga a NV4500 swap look very appealing...

You don't want to really start this fight. I changed my knob to a c60 which labels the knob as 1-2-3-4. He still won't agree.

Yes I do. Just think of the forward gears. How many are there? Four. So that makes it a 4 speed.
I need to find a C60 knob then just to keep it correct.

And when people say they have a 5 speed tranny, those knobs show 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 on them. There aren't any L, 1, 2, 3, 4 on any NV4500 tranny even though they have a low first gear, too.

yup, people just like to call it a 3 spd with a granny gear cuz they think it sounds cool... 4 forward gears, 4 spd......

old school, 3 on the tree box? 3 spd...

I guess using that logic, a rig with a 15 speed is only a 5 or 6 speed when bob tailing...:haha:

I blame GM for the idiotic labeling on the shift knob, but I guess it was the easiest way to let people know using that gear to get moving wasn't required.

I have never called it a 3 speed. I've always called it a 4 speed cause it has 4 forward gears. Highest gear being 3rd, lowest gear being Low. I don't say it cause I think it makes me look cool, it's just what makes sense. Opinions are like assholes...

How about the 9 speed in our semi??? It has 9 gears, the highest of which is 8th gear.

I call my SM465 a 4 speed, because it has 4 forward gears, the highest of which is 3rd gear.
