Shop build. HEAT!

I was contemplating that today and yesterday Lane. Gotta see if I can get my cousins scaffolding, but I think that might be a good idea
It would be easier without anything in your way, but you can make it work either way.

Sometimes it sucks being in a small town. No one within 20 miles has 1/2 staple things to hold my wire down. Amazon guaranteed 2 shipping is more of an estimate for here. So I ordered some on Monday. Won't be here till Friday. Hopefully Ace got more in. He said he should have some very soon.

So ceiling. Easiest way to tape and mud it?

Advice?

It doesn't need to be sanded much but I don't want it to look hack. I'd really like to get this done before my lights go up.

Looking for scaffolding I can borrow right now. Renting it is risky cause I don't know how much I can get done in a given day

rollable scaffolding would be easiest. You would need extra tall stilts and good balance. I would use the self sticking drywall tape. Place the tape, cover with mud using a 6" knife. Second coat use a 12" knife and call it good. You could go more coats, but it is just a shop. Are you planning on painting, if so will need to make third coat and texture it.

I'm priming with Kilz and painting. I have been told this would be fine to do.

Personally, I like regular paper tape better on new construction. Just like John said above, but opposite steps with paper tape. Mud first, lay tape in mud, squeeze out everything you can on the first coat using a 6” rounded taping knife. Then I jump to the 10”, then 12”.

If you have any gaps in your rock, fill with hot mud first. It will keep your tape from bubbling.

Gaps? Naw no gaps. Couple of gaping holes but pretty tight overall.

I'll likely be doing this by myself so the self sticking tape is very appealing as I will be moving slow. Looking up, standing on scaffolding is not a good situation for head pain

I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express, So I was using the easiest way of tape. Anyone can hang rock!! I use a professional to cover up my my bent nails and waffle head marks.
Skip trowel for the win!!

I’d stay away from the fiberglass mesh.
  • None of the pros use it
  • It’s thick and hard to hide on butt joints
  • Always frays and shows through, also gets in mud tray
  • Sanding can cause frays
The paper tape is self sticking too - just apply a bed of mud first and wipe the tape into it. Done both paper and mesh and the paper is much easier to deal with.

A heavy spray texture hides a lot. Just sayin’ :D

I would spray that and be done...plus you can get the texture with a little glitter already in it. Nothing screams unique like a glitter ceiling...cept mabe mirrors

I’m not a pro, but the paper tape always seemed to hard to get right, always bubbles up. I loved the fiberglass mesh tape since you can just tape all the joints, then go around with hot mud (don’t like the premixed stuff either) and get them all covered. Then go back for second coat when dry. Maybe not even need a second coat in a shop ceiling.

If you’re getting bubbles then you’re wiping too much mud out. And the premixed stuff should be thinned out to the consistency of something resembling Cool Whip.
You should watch the series of videos by Kody Horvey, very informative but hard to hear sometimes with the echo.

Wish I had good advice on the mud/tape but I hate doing it, so I just pay to have it done. It's one of the few things I will just suck it up on.

You'll definitely want to have a scaffold on wheels so you can move it easily and you'll have to clear your floor for it. On the plus side though, you could use that same scaffold while hanging your lights. Way easier than doing it at the top of a ladder.
