Shorty the crewcab. (Been saved from the chopping block)

81 CC short bed conversion
Man, all you guys making me want an old crew cab more and more all the time.

Man, all you guys making me want an old crew cab more and more all the time.
They did that to me.
I had sold 3 crew cabs and parted 2 and now I bought a kit.
Clean cab, clean frame and clean front clip.
I have all running gear to make it complete.
Just a lot of time.
Maybe a project with my boys.
They are 2 and 3 now :pimp:

Frickin spring bolts came right out :woot::saweet::waytogo:

That's why I went West to buy a truck lol.

Even the FUSH bushings came out by hand. I lightly tapped the steel part out with a drift pin and hammer. Then pulled the rubber out with my fingers.

New energy suspension bushings are installed in the FUSH. Gotta cut the rest down for the 2.5" springs yet.

Ran out of time to do more. I had time but 10pm is a little late to run an impact and air compressor in a residential area lol.

Rear axle just needs the U bolts plasma sliced and the shock bolts tapped/possibly hammered out lol. That end isn't totally as cooperative. All the nuts came right off. But the sleeves seem more stuck. It was too late to bang on chit by that time.

I need too buy new front spring front bolts. Neither are what I'd call rusty but one is slightly bent some how. ... At the thread end.
So new bolts there.
And I'm going to swap a few parts from the bee in the steering area.
Still has great brakes and no power steering :dunno:.

Then the new axle and springs go in.

I was at the shop all day yesterday and all I got done was dropped the rear axle out.
My mom, oldest son, his gf, sister in-law, cousin, best friend, and his son were all there... So it quickly switched to party mode lol.

I got a healthy scare when I cut the u bolts off. The front ones popped a little from tension. But the back ones ... :yikes:

I climbed up in there with my face sorta close, trying to shave off a corner of the ubolt without hitting my spring.
When I got to the last hairs width it went BOOM!! And separated about 3 inches. Scared the chit out of me lol.

On a separate note, I'm kind of thinking about removing a couple leafs from my front springs. The bottom 2 in fact.

When I got these springs the guy said they were custom made (no idea who by) for a truck with a plow. It's got a lot of leaves and they are pretty thick

Don't do it run it first see how it looks and settles maybe what you want now.

I agree try it before changing it

I just took off the very bottom super short leaf. The next one up had the military wrap, or whatever those are, attached to it. So I just left it all alone.

Rear spring pack will be a custom thrown together bastard set lol. Made up of some of the stock leafs and a few from a nice set of 52" ones I have laying around.

Here's how the custom rears turned out. I did this because of broken leaves in the old packs. It wasn't the same leaf so I just took a few out, and replaced them with some plus the over load from the 52"s.

Gotta finish painting them and let em all cure a day or so. Then throw them in and get the rear axle in.

I also figured out that I need spring plates. I didn't realize that the u bolts I have are the type that saddle the axle with nuts up. Oh well I guess. One more thing to add $.. :doah:lol.

Found spring plates for the rear.. I forgot the bee had them. Gotta clean them up today. Maybe by Friday I'll have the rear in.

I took the steering gear out. Fluid smells burnt real bad.

Given that the brakes work but steering doesn't, I'm not sure if it would be the steering gear, or the hydro boost unit. I'm not sure what all happens inside there....?

Radiator is out. Found the leak and one that is super close. I'm going to dab some solder on both places today.

Springs and axles all at least setting under the truck. Really wish I had rear lift springs or a shackle flip....... Blocks will have to do for the time being.

Didnt get a lot of pics of it. But I got the radiator fixed.

Then also got the steering gear input shaft seals changed. Got the drop steering arm on. And got the whole thing back in and tight

It's not going to do any hauling. My dually is for that.
And it does technically have the overload that came with the 52"s.

just a fyi from my days as a spring tech in a shop . your #2-3-4 leafs will be acting the same as one . leaf packs need staggered out ends to work and flex as each there own . your 2-3-4 leafs are all basically the same lengths . this will = 1 massive thick leaf in the way the spring works .

and if you happen to have some extra rear spring front hangers for the frame do a home brew flip on a budget like i did . 2wd hangers and ride height set were i wanted . then drilled and bolted and welded support on bottom to bolt to the frame . then cut off extra top to clear box .
