I am in the process of installing a set of deep tinted sliding windows in my '87 K5. It had deep tinted solid glass from the factory, and I miss the sliders like I had years ago in another K5. I have totally disassembled the window assemblies and have powder coated the frames and wing window brackets gloss black. Hopefully that will make the frames blend in better with the deep tinted glass. I have located replacement latches, a Southco product (McMaster-Carr part number: 1891A49. 10 pack of both halves for $14.54). I have located the felts for the vertical divider. Any residential glass shop should have that material in bulk for about $.50/foot. I think LMC truck has the rubber trim piece that goes in the slot in front of the fixed glass pane, outside of the sliding pane(part number 36-6196 for $18.95 each). My question is where can I find the proper flocked rubber channel for the sliding glass to slide in? I build street rods for a living, and have a pretty good network of suppliers and I have found nothing that is the right size. I have found one piece still on the shelf at a GM dealer, and for an arm and a leg, I can have it. But that only does one side. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Doug

I have spoken with LMC a few times trying to find these parts. They have a few part numbers for seals listed that are relative to sliding windows. According to the phone sales associates that I've spoken with, they "can't say for sure" which parts of the window assembly they offer. Basically, they have a part number but they don't have the info on exactly what component that part number represents. And they just don't have time to grab one off the shelf and describe the part to me. In other words, they have parts to sell, but they won't take the time to tell me what they are. Great customer service? Don't think so.

That LMC part is not the right one. Just went thru this for another guy about a month ago. I'm working on a solution with local factory as nobody has it or makes it. Stay tuned...

Irish, are you referring to the 36-6196 not being the right one? If not, what is the part that they are selling?

No. I'm talking about the felt lined channel the slider rides in. About 8' long per side. They sold him what looked like a front door window wipe. Of course he wasn't clear on what he wanted. Either way, nobody has it.

I got lucky and found everything to replace mine about five years ago from a glass shop that did windows and wind shield replacements on cars. It took a lots of searching to find anything close to working. They used anything that was weird to build the sliders. nothing is standard auto glass felt.

Rampage, yes, I searched flocked rubber channel. There are countless different shapes and sizes available, just not what we need for our Blazers. The channel in the window frame is 3/4" deep and 3/4" wide. The flocked channel that was in mine which I assume to be original, was 5/8" tall, and the glass is .190" thick.

When I bought my K5, it had a brand new set of sliding side windows. It has the company name sticker on the windows. Right now, it's at the transmission shop almost 400 miles away. When it's back, I'll see what company it is, and let you guys know. Should be next week.

Irish, is part number 36-6196, from LMC, #36 on hour GM diadram?
Yep. That's the piece and not the felt one. GM just called it "filler"
You're spot on about size too.
I'm going to factory this coming week to hopefully get this done before end of September.

Irish, thanks. It's about time I get some good news on this project. I have a local glass guy that has a roll of OLD flocked rubber channel that is left over from the conversion van days. I need to get my hands on that and start measuring. This might actually get done after all.

No problem. That van stuff might be right for the job. I'll keep you posted how I make out.
And welcome to CK5. Good bunch guys here. They know K5s inside & out.

Irish,
I received my LMC #36-6196 today. It's not the "filler". It's their attempt at the flocked window channel. This poor excuse for a replacement is 7/16" wide at best, and as you recall, the channel of the window frame is 3/4" wide. It escapes me how they can sell us this crap and think that we'll just tolerate the pathetic fit and quality. According to their customer service rep, they haven't had TOO MANY complaints. She added that customers have probably just not follower through with complaining about and returning the item. Pretty sad. Oh well. Back to the drawing board.

I assembled and installed the windows today. I powder coated the frames and wing vent castings gloss black and polished all the glass. It looks pretty nice. I found a flocked rubber channel from Sofseal that works well. It's not a spot on match, but it'll do the job. I found a company called "Atwood" that makes RV windows. I wouldn't be at all surprised if theyes were the oem for the sliders because they have a rubber extrusion that exactly matches the "filler". They call it a "filler plug, single pane. # 132014470. It's $1.20 per foot from the manufacturer. I haven't received it yet, but they emailed me the blue print for it and it's spot on. I'll check in with an update once I receive it.

Hey "Times Welding" Any luck on the window channel (flocked rubber)? I am looking for that also for my 89 K5 windows. You are right the LMC part is not correct and I have had a hard time finding the right channel.

I'd be interested too. Keep us posted if it's the correct one or not.....:waytogo:

Windows Are Done!!

Well, I've got the windows assembled and installed, and they work as good as new and look BETTER than new. I couldn't be more pleased with them. The frames have been powder coated gloss black, all of the glass has been polished (or replaced if too badly scratched) and all of the seals have been replaced.
The flocked rubber channel that I used is from Soffseal. Part number "E634" It is NOT a perfect dimensional match, but it does fit and looks fine. There are no rattles or whistling air leaks. It only comes in 96" lengths, so I had to splice it. I put the splice near the center "post", at the top. At this position, it is always in contact with the glass, so the sliding window cannot abrade the cut ends.
For the "filler", I found a company called "Atwood " who manufactures, among other things, RV windows. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they were the OEM. The part number is "13204470" and it is an absolutely perfect match. The folks at Atwood were even kind enough to email me a section drawing of this rubber extrusion so I could confirm that it was the correct part before I wasted my money on it.
I am unable to post pictures here, so if anyone would like to see the parts in question, PM me and I will text pictures to you.
