smokey start ups....

well, i turned the IP back to line up the notches and she still smokes like a freight train on start up. so - does that leave me with just needing to replace the IP? :( why does a worn IP cause this? not injecting the fuel at the right time, i suppose?

Does it start hard ? If it does and it smokes sounds more like your cold start switch is gone ? that switch is on the back of the passenger head . If it is GM doesn't stock it any more . I do have the part number .

what is a cold start switch? if it's that giant cylindrical thing - no, i don't have it, but my GP's are a manual push-button set up, so it doesn't matter. that's not really the issue. i don't have a hard time getting it to fire up - it just smokes like nobody's business when it starts.

ive been reading all this and im in, my 6.2 smokes on startup but only when its under 40 degrees... i also have my gps on a manual switch... when its warm out, (50 and up) i get a real lil puff out of the left side but thats it..... any of that normal.......?

The cold start switch is part of the high idle circuit, not the glow plug controller.

mine idles high when it wants to and sometimes it idles a lil rough at start up...???

Have you tested all your glow plugs? You are probably not firing on all 8 cylinders when it's running a little rough.

yea all brand new i think 40g ...........changed them, fuel filter, glow plug connectors and the wiring, changed oil to 15-40....

The cold start switch also advances the timing making it easier to start and cuts down on smoking as well as ups the idle .

where is it located and whats it look like..........?

I've always seen them on the rear pass side head. Usually above the exhaust manifold. IIRC 3/4 NPT fitting with two electrical connections, one wire in (power), one wire out to the IP.

woah. okay. so, can we get a coupe pics of this high idle dealio? i definitely don't have one - or at least not all the parts. i might need that. didn't realize it did anything to the timing - i just thought it had to do with the engine speed.

also, for what it's worth, when i set the timing lines back together, it smoked SO much worse and took forever to clear up and had NO power. I advanced the timing again (meaning, i rotated the pump back toward the driver's side) and it helped alot.

The piece in the pass. head is a temp switch to tell the solenoids when to turn on. The solenoids are on/by the injector pump where the pink wire connects. One is the cold advance solenoid the other is fast idle solenoid. Here is a wire diagram that may help.

so can i just put it on a switch and power it up that way? how would i know when to turn it off? that seems like the simplest option for me... plus i'm a control freak. :)

so here's what i'm working with. it looks like a cap is missing and that it had 2 spade connectors for wiring on it. i do have one spade, directly behind what would be a pink wire - but mine is yellow.

am i missing an important part of the cold-start set up? or do i just need to power that one spade that's behind the IP wire? I am guessing no - that the thing with the cap missing is the cold-start advance solenoid and the little spade behind the yellow wire is simply there to make a connection between the two? meaning, i need to replace that cap and i need to power that guy up?

edit. okay, so the phone picture sucks. i know. the thing that appears to be missing a cap would be the dealio directly south of the yellow IP wire. you can see a shiny thing that looks sort of "wheel" like, and below that is where I believe there should be 2 spades sticking up. the spade that still exists is south west of the yellow IP wire.

for reference, the right side of the picture would be toward the front of the engine, with that large grey thing being the coolant cross over pipe.

Yes you can. Only need to be on for 5 min. most. But I would just hook it up through the switch in the head. Really no reason to have it going to a toggle switch.
