So...theoretical SM465 swap into a 6.2L/TH400 equipped truck

Hey Bobbbbbbb.... Id love to hear more, Im "thinking" of a 465 swap myself, getting tired of the 700R4 thats behind my 6.2...

How much do you think you spent in all? I found a 465 not far from me for $250 out of a 4x4... Maybe I need the rest of the toys with it, transfer case, bellhousing, etc...?? I guess I should check to see if it is hydro first, or does that matter??

Thanks,
Andrew

I was lucky,I paid $200. for the transmission and crossmember.A friend let me have the column, pedal assembly, hydrobell, flywheel and clutch off a junk c30 box truck. The po had apparently just changed the clutch before the engine went and he junked the truck so I didnt need to buy much.

If the trans you found is around '81+ and had a 208 behind it a 208 from behind a th400 will bolt right on.The hydro bell will work with any sm465 and there are kits to go hydo using the earlier bellhousing.Depending on the year you may or may not need the crossmember.Getting the removable trans tunnel makes the job much easier,[if your truck doesn't have one],but it isnt a necessity. If you get stuff from a similar year it pretty much just bolts right on.

I found a 465 for that fits my '82 w/6.2l via http://car-parts.com

Are they "all" hydraulic?

Mine is 700R4 and NP208... How do I know if I can recycle my current Xfer case, or get the 205?? I dont think I can reuse it...

Damn, this might get a bit pricy but at this point, Im pretty pissed at my 700...

No, not all 465s are hydraulic. Some (maybe most?) are mechanically operated devices. If you're not going to be flexing out your suspension significantly, then the mechanical system will work just fine for you. Some guys complain of it making their leg hurt after a while because it is a bit harder to push than a hydraulic system. However, I never found that to be the case. Hydraulic system is better for wheeling that really articulates a lot. Because of frame twist/body twist during articulation, the mechanical system can get bound up and even fall apart as it gets "stretched." Hydraulic lines move with the body/frame.

I'm not familiar enough with x-case adapters and whatnot to be able to tell you if your 208 will fit. There are differences between the models in terms of what transfer case fits what transmission, related to the bolt pattern. Also, the spline output makes a difference. Any idea on either/both of those issues?

I think Im going hyd for ease of install... Im stupid so every bit helps!

On the spline count, etc.. When I had the trans & xfer out before while doing all the fun work underside (rear main seal, pump seal, etc.. etc..) I didnt think of getting ANY spline counts... :doah:

No need to get a spline count, your 208 has 27 splines and will work only with a 700 or a th350 with the right adapter.
To go SM465 you will need the specific adapter and the right 32 spline long input 205 or the right adapter for a 208 and a change of the input shaft on your 208 to 32 spline.
I can help you with the 205, I can even sell you the complete package sm465/205, but shipping might kill the deal unless your only option is shipping then it's the same.
As for ease of installation, the hydro is actually more involved.:dunno:

Quoted for truth. You just bolt everything up and you're good to go. The only difficult part about it is making sure you drill your hole for the pushrod in the right place the first time. But, you have to do that either way.

Someone stated earlier in the thread to not use a dual mass flywheel behind the 6.2 to SM465. I thought the diesel needed the DMFlywheel? I have a 465/208 already and plan to drop in a 6.5TD shortly after we move into this new house.

I do not have experience with either one, but I believe the earlier style was dual mass, the newer style ( better ) is single mass.
I don't know which one I have since it's still all together on my truck, but I will soon know.

6.2s don't use a dual-mass flywheel and 6.5s dont 'need' one.A 6.2 flywheel will work on a 6.5 just fine.

I'm in a parts gathering stage and curious if a pressure plate and disc(I will just check the spline count on my sm465) from a 350 will work with the 6.2 flywheel? I have a center force sitting on my shelf from one of those center bolt valve cover engines and I also have a flywheel and clutch off a 250. I also have the clutch setup from the donor truck 350 3/4 ton but it looks less favorable.

I know the part numbers are different, but I don't know if it will physically bolt up or not.

The clucth will work on either engine, the difference is the flywheel.
They do for some reason have different numbers, might be the pilot bushing or bearing that is different because it's a different cranck, but I have put both gas and diesel clutches on my diesel and they were both same.

Ok thanks. I may look into getting a new one anyways because I just took the ruler to them and I have an 11 and a 12 but the pressure plate for the 12 would probably need to be turned and with the diesel I should probably be running the biggest clutch I can.

So finally getting towards putting in a new clutch and was wondering if they are different for hydraulic vs. manual linkage. The one I am looking at is listed specifically for hydraulic but I haven't seen another option I like for a diaphragm clutch.

I have a 10 spline sm465 and a brand new flywheel for a 6.2.

I shopped around some acdelcos with little luck and I prefer to get my parts locally anyways. I also have a coupon for it :woot:
