One concern I have right now are the gear ratios in the axles, 456. Thinking that's high for 40" tires. Probably change those out once we get the thing together.

I say run the 456's and find out, I bet with all that torque coming from the big block, it'll work great.

What's your final gear going to be in crawl? Worked the numbers yet?

I'm running 5:13's with my 40's but I have yet to try the highway.
My low/low/low is just over 100:1 with the 400/203/205 combo, don't know how yours will work out the the Atlas but interested in finding out.

400/203/205 = 2.48 x 4 x 5.13 = 51:1....how is that over 100:1??

Typically a torque converter will multiply the output by 2+/- depending on the gear you're in, throttle applied, load, stall speed, etc., etc. Even on the highway at speed, unless you have a "lock-up" converter, there is a small amount of slippage between the two turbines inside the converter. this means that if you're final drive ratio is 3.73, (from the axle gearing), the actual drive ratio is going to be a little bit higher numerically, (again dependant upon, gear, throttle, load, stall speed, etc.).

I had it explained to me this way. Imagine that you have two box fans facing each other, now if you turn one on, the other fan will start to move because of the turbulent motion created by the first fan. The first fan, (input or engine side), will spin at exactly the same rpm that the motor will drive it, because it is mechanically attached to the motor (flywheel), but the second fan will always spin a little slower because there is no mechanical attachment between the two fans, just the turbulent action of the air, (or in the case of a transmission, fluid) causing it to spin. Eventually, the second fan will spin close to the same speed as the first fan, but unless there becomes a mechanical linkage attaching both fans, it will never spin exactly the same speed.

That differential is greater when beginning to move from a complete stop, thus causing the multiplication effect.

Clear as mud?

Whew...

Thanks for saving me the time.

The math works, if you want, I can post it. :D

Nice Blazer it looks familiar..................................

Silly question for you guys, I want your opinion on the color. :D

Originally it was yellow, like you see on the inside of the firewall in some of the pics. Since then someone has painted it a couple diff colors, the last being black. Im mainly thinking black, or the original yellow. I know, huge diff, and I keep going back and forth. lol I do like the original yellow, and going back to an original color has always been something I like doing, but there's a problem. I already own 2 yellow vehicles. lmao Seriously.

Actually originally it was this color. If you look in the RPO code it says "Parchment Trim" if I remember correctly, no yellow under it. I don't know what the yellow was. Under that black paint there is nothing but primer and bare metal, I sanded all the paint to bare metal when I painted it. It is nothing special and not worth keeping, as I did it because this was ugly, I had planned to get mostly new body panels, so I didn't really care.

Here's a picture of it primered (faded a bit) to give you an idea.

So if you want to sell it, let me know, ill buy it back, lol.

Is that a picture of the truck with its original paint (first pic)? I dont think Ive ever seen another blazer painted that way before. :)

The yellow is on the inside of the tub, under the black. I assumed it was orig because it looks like high quality paint, like a baked on factory finish. You can see what Im talking about in 3 or 4 of the pics on page 1. I'll get a better close-up pic tomorrow in the day light and post it. Thanks for posting the pics and info Greg. :D

I dont think I ever implied I wanted to sell the truck, its a keeper.

so my crawl ratio would actually be double?...

700R4 x doubler x 5.86

3.06 x 6 x 5.86=108:1 so.....

Or so, yes. Like I said, it varies due to all of those factors, but roughly, you could call it 2x or so. It's close enough.

Later,
Buddy

BTW, you have the x-case combo that I want one of these days to go behind my NV4500 one of these days.

Greg, I just looked at the color tag on the inside of the glovebox, it definite states it was originally "light yellow" with parchment trim. Even on the glove box door you can see the yellow under where the black has come off, Im confident it was orig.

Lemme know if you have any more insight, thanks.

Have you looked into the shorty headers fro the chevelle? I have seen a lot of people running those and I think they will fit with out too much of an issue.

Would they fit inside the frame rails? Im concerned about the clearance, looks really tight. Thanks for the info, do you happen to know which year chevelle headers? I'll definitely check into it.

Come on man, of course I know it was yellow inside, it was my truck for years, I don't need a picture, lol. The das was painted black when I got it. Now, I dont know what shade the yellow was but I sanded all the paint off and there was no yellow under the color in the first picture I posted. I remember somewhere it was a blue though.

Oh, you didn't imply you wanted to sell it, im just saying, makes me wish I never sold it. Keep up the good work. Oh where do you live again? Im going down to ontario tomorrow until monday, maybe I could stop by and check it out, if I have time.....?

Oh ok, thought your last post sounded like you didn't think the truck was ever yellow. ;)

Do you know about the note below the driver's seat? lmao! Did you put in the seats? The seat mounts were welded in, when I removed the weld beads and pulled the seats, under the driver's seat on the floor's sheetmetal it said "F*ck You!" written in marker. Pulling the seats was more work than Id expected, so when it was over and I saw that note, I lmao for quite a while. :D

:haha: AHAHAHHAHAHAH!!!!!!!! NO WAY did I put those in. In fact I think the pass side was broken at the welds anyway. The guy I bought it off of told me they were seats out of a van or something, they were actually pretty comfy. Was the note on the drivers or pass engers side? I might have wrote that, got a pic? LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL yeah funny stuff. It was under the driver's seat. Both seats' welds were still in tact, but I think the driver's side was harder to remove iirc.

I think I took a pic, I'll check the archives. If not, I'll take one tomorrow when its light. Either way I'll post one tomorrow.

Someone has a mean sense of humor, I love it. lol
