Somebody here is tracking Chalets...not sure if this one is accounted for?

This one looks bad ass. but the price doesn't ...
1977 Casa Grande #1457. It's a retro-looking restoration color, but not a factory correct one, especially not for the camper unit. Plus whoever did the repaint put '76 model stainless steel trim on the Jimmy. This person told me he bought it on Feb 26, but now he wants to sell it in order to get an all original rig and was asking me what the best venue was for that. Does he have it already listed somewhere?

its listed on facebook

see if this works
It does!! Many thanks for that alert! FB is not exactly the easiest platform for me to dig through. If he can get that price after just 35 days of ownership, he'd make a $10 grand profit. Nice work if ya can get it, I guess. Wish I had that kind of extra cash for impulse purchases .....

If any of you are holding on to Chalet / Casa Grande Blazer/Jimmy's I don't think the market is going to get much hotter than it is right now.

I wish I had one...

(Sorry, I don't have the link, just saw the screen grab roll by on FB)

Well, …. the question to ask there is what exactly "the market" is. In the specific case of Chalet #0429 going for $125 grand, the full context of that picture is that is rig alleged never left the ownership if the Chevy dealer it was delivered to in 1976 (he supposedly only put 32k miles on it). The rest of the bidders dropped out after it passed the $47,500 point, and it appears neither of the two remaining bidders were aware that they could have bought this rig for $59,900 at the sellers' place, on at eBay when the sellers listed it there next for $69,900, before they decided to put it in the BaT auction. Neither of those two bidders seemed to express any concern in the BaT comments section about the rig having a used car dealer plate on the back, nor did either ask any tough questions about its mileage, and so far, neither has contacted me at blazerchalet.com for more info on these rigs in general. The losing bidder there, by the way, is the same guy who won the $112 grand auction for the supposedly 57 miles '75 Blazer.

It might be safe to say the really big dollars market for a 1-owner perfectly preserved time capsule rig - if any more of those can be found - is now reduced to just one buyer. When it comes to the other 7 or 8 or so Chalets and the one Casa Grande #1457 that have sold for between $17 grand and $35 grand, I'd say that market might only be as big as a dozen or so guys around the country, who were oblivious that they could have bought their identical same rig in the same condition they got it at half the price or less if they had asked me about the rigs before the classic car dealer/flippers got to the rigs. And each of those rigs had major restoration faults that seriously hurt their collector value.

My thought is that the "market" of buyers willing to drop mega dollars on super spit-shined rigs who display no curiosity of what they are buying is extremely limited, and will grow smaller as more of them take the time to learn something about these. Does anybody believe one of these mega dollar buyers will now snatch up a rusted one for $48 grand and think he's getting a fabulous bargain?

If the story of the $125k chalet is true I seriously doubt there being another one with the same one owner lineage.

There are always going to be super rich guys willing to spend stupid amounts of money on any collector car or truck if they want it bad enough.

Chances of another selling north of 6 figures is slim. Unless a documented original unrestored gem in mint condition it's not going to happen again.

It's one thing to stuff a hemi cuda into the corner of a garage or warehouse to save it for an investment way back in the day. I have my doubts many did that with a chalet. Keep this in mind GM had the district sales guys bribing dealers to take them. Not all the dealers wanted them. Like most unique special run units they were more expensive than a regular K5 and hard to sell. When they did, most used them not stuff them in a corner to sell later as a collectors item.

Which leads the other problem. If they got used they were prone to all the normal rust that a '76/'77 Blazer would develop plus the added problem of the chalet leaking in multiple areas. They didn't last. Sure that makes the value of what's left greater but not to the 6 figure zone.

It's all messed up because two rich dudes cranked the price up at auction for for one truck and the general public will see the link to the page above and draw the conclusion that if that one went for that much the one they own just went up in value.

Famous last words... lol :rotfl:

You watch the price of these will jump just like everything else has lately.
I'm not saying the prices won't jump up. It's obvious they will go up. But the big dollar value Chalets are few and far between.

It does beg the question that I've been wondering about these trucks though. @a77blazerchalet could probably fill us in. Of the ones he's been tracking are there any that fit the bill of super original, low mileage unrestored and mint condition that are still around? My guess is it's not likely.

Sure there could be one hidden away that isn't for sale now and may show up later. But out of the known production how many are accounted for? How many campers got orphaned when the Blazer or Jimmy rotted out from under it? I'm just curious to know where the numbers are at now and if the total of known units has increased since the popularity has increased over the last couple of years.

...do you have one in Knoxville Tennessee in your list? I drive by it frequently. ..
Just looked, nothing in the list, but just 3 days back in one of my random searches through Facebook, I was a comment that said, verbatim, "A guy down the road has one in his driveway, its the only one I've ever seen, still sitting there today!" and a quick look into the person's account page said he lived in Knoxville. If that was you, look out for a message in your FB system, but if not, I'd be indebted to you if you can get any photos of it along with additional info, even just a detailed description with particular unique distinguishing features - running boards, stickers, other add-ons. The key thing is always the little silver rectangular plate on the back with the serial number and build date.

Funny you post this just now. I stopped in the driveway on the way home just now, but did not see anyone around. It is far enough off of the road that I won't approach if I don't see someone out. I will keep looking.

I have wanted one of these since I was a teenager. A friend bought one for $500 back in 04. He just wanted to make a mud truck out of it. I wanted to buy it from him but I was broke. He ripped the camper off and burned it. It was a 76 gmc...

Wondering if it is this same one I snagged from photos a long time back. I forget where these were, the lettering on the side says "Havoc Offroad." Still friends with the guy? Whether it is the one I snagged or another, is there a way you could get the VIN for the Jimmy? That's part of my cross reference to the camper serial numbers.

I go see him maybe once a year. Next time i go I’ll get the vin number. I think it’s awesome that you keep track of these.

I hope that’s not it! I saw it a year or two ago and it still looked decent and he has a blazer shell on the back. Actually he said he would sell it to me... I wouldn’t mind buying it and trying to find a decent camper to put on it.... or at least one that isn’t totally shot.... I doubt that it would ever be worth anything since it wouldn’t have the original camper.....

I wonder how many were destroyed like this through the years? It sucks to see them slowly disappear, destroyed, or neglected to the point where it is no use trying to save them.

the one my friend burned was actually decent inside. No leaks or anything.
