steering arm removal.

Where Colby and I are stuck is the cones are not unseated yet. The cones are lead, they expand to net fit when the nuts are torqued at factory. Works real well, I bet no one has ever come accross loose cones. The high temp will soften the lead enough to relieve the pressure, drilling does the same or removes enough you can dig it out.

you have to get pb blaster an let it soke throug hit with hammer an your troubels r home free

yep. and, that wasn't my question. clearly you have to take the nuts off of the bolts/studs. from what has been written in this post, it appears that the studs must be removed to remove the steering arm. if that's the case, what holds the studs, and thereby the steering arm, to the knuckle.

you can leave that alone an put a new drop down from box to grag link

henry1986 - why are you sending me your email address? (sorry for the random hijack - he's not a member, so i can't pm him to ask this question)

The studs stay in the knuckle, there is no need to remove them unless ya mangle em.
Once the nuts and cones are removed the arm will come right off.
And I have never seen lead cones, every arm I have dealt with has had steel cones.

y is that that is what was told to me from a 4x4 expert here in town

i have a 86 with a 6inc lift an went with a 4inc drop arm from box works great:laugh:

i'm happy to hear that, henry.

so, POWERMAD, what you're saying is that the cones come up off of the studs and that the studs are not an integrated part of the cones. thus, the cones break off and the stud remains part of the knuckle. i think i'm finally getting it. (maybe mine's just so d@mn dirty that i can't see that where others might). so, were i to go to a parts store to get replacement cones, what would i ask for??

Unless yer a moroon ya can't break em.:p:
But in the off chance ya do there are a few places in town that have 9/16" cones. We usualy carry them in stock and if we don't then there's Freightliner, Kenworth, DSU, Six States.. ect. ect. :D

ok. so i'm on the right track now. and yes, i am a moroon. that color is so sexy. ;) guess i'll have to try that next weekend when i get to salem to work on the truck. thanks all. er, most of you.

btw - i know that maroon is spelled with an a.

I stand corrected. Its been a year since I bought them. Yes they are steel, so its rust we're up against. Time for me to get PBBlaster, soak, and knock that bus tour D off. The GM number is 03965138. Sorry about the misinfo.:doah:
