Steering box is shot

Oh well. I'll roll the dice on this part as above not sure why there are two rubber washer and two metal ones. From what I've seen you only need one of each.

If it were me I would pull the box and do the repair on a work bench. Do not remove the top, or mess with sector shaft adjustment bolt. The adjustment bolt is on the top cover.

You will need all 4 of the parts in the kit rubber seal in first washer second seal and finial washer then snap ring.

You'll need a pitman arm puller, and a 200-250 ft pd 1/2" drive torque wrench. Give the hoses a good inspection. I they are iffy now would be the time to replace.

If I remember correctly there are 2 seals back to back

Found a couple videos on YouTube and got the parts from Napa. Box doesn't have to be removed for this particular repair.

Ok got the nut is off and the pitman arm loose. Do I have to take it completely off? I can't get it to slip off the sector shaft there is enough play for it drop below unless I'm missing something ? So remove the pin and castle nut and take the arm completely off. I kept the nut on there incase it went crazy but all was good

So...how do you plan to slip the old seals out and new ones in with the pitman arm in the way?
I understand that I know it needs to be moved :haha:. I'm asking do I need to mark the placements when taking the pitman arm off to keep alignment correct

Ok I have the pitman arm loose. But I don't have any play really to get it off. The steering drag link doesn't give me any room to slide it as it hits the cross member areas.

Do I have to disconnect this as well to get enough play to remove the pitman arm?

It appears upon closer look the entire drag link has to be removed in order to get the pitman arm off. There is not enough play to get it off the steering box pitman shaft.

This has really turned into a project. I mean if I'm going to all the trouble to replace the seals in the steering box. And in doing so everything for the steering, idle arm, drag link, pitman arm has to come off in order to do that. I might as well change everything out since all the rubber and is over 50 years old.

I was eyeing this kit

Just undo the box from frame since you are working on the box.
If you turn the wheels left or right the drag link will change heights. Do this only if not messing with steering box

I'll try but I find it pretty ridiculous on this years vehicle that to change the pitman arm the entire steering front has to be removed in order to do that. My blazer isn't this way.

I'd rather not take the steering box off

I thought this was a box adjustment or replacement?
Turn the tire and pull down onbthe pitman at same time

Steering box is leaking, need to take pitman arm off to fix that. Pitman arm won't come off as is there is no play to slide it off. The one video I found, he has to remove the entire steering front to get it off. I linked above.

Center drag link and tie rods all had to come off in order for that to happen. 67-72 forum was no help at all. The manuals I have don't have any info either.

So, you're saying I can turn the wheels and get room to get the pitman arm off?
