Still fighting the gremlin...

yeah, thats what I thought too. When I saw the filter in that pump looking brand new, I pretty much ruled out crud in the tank.
unless......I heard a story once about a person who bought a car at an auction, and it had a problem where it would die while they were driving it, but kinda randomly. They finally dropped the tank, and found several bricks of cocaine in the tank. The plastic on one of them had started to unravel, and would get sucked into the pickup, blocking it off, causing the car to stall.

At this point, I can't rule out anything. Yesterday made me think it was an ignition problem again, because of the raw fuel smell, and I know HEI ignition modules can act funny in the heat. I had ruled that out when I put in the new disty last year, and the problem persisted, but now I may re-visit the ignition system.

I am thinking that it is heat related somewhere, fine for 100 miles and fine for almost home then it starts, maybe it doesn't like your house wants to move :D

the tank does seem like its bigger than what it holds. I think it only takes about 20 gallons to fill it, which seems small for a 3/4 ton truck, even if it did come with a 350 from the factory. The gas gauge doesnt really work, so when I fill it up, it reads about 1/4. I usually just guesstimate 10 MPG, and when in doubt I add just in case.
Its tough to get actual measurements off the tank itself, because its got a big metal skid plate/sheild all the way around it.
That would be pretty crazy......

actually, the round trip was 120 miles or so. So it was fine in the cool morning air on the drive there, and fine for roughly half the trip home.
Funny thing is, when we were leaving the lake, my 12Yo remarked that the engine was running so smoothly after all of the tuning we'd done, that you couldn't even really hear it. He was right too. It was just purring when we got on the road.

Not a saddle. its a between the rails blazer/burb tank. It looks stock to me, including the big metal cover that goes over it, but then again, I have nothing to compare it too. Maybe 25 gallons? Since the gauge is screwy, I never risk running it all the way out. It took 20 gal last time I felt that it was pretty low. I suppose there could've been 5 gallons left in there, but probably not more than that.

blazer/ burb tanks are 30/40 the only small ones made were military ones and the are really short and hold 20, if it hangs down with a skid plate its a 40

I actually tried to drop the tank a few weeks ago. But to get to the bolts that hold that skid plate on, you have to remove the rear bumper, and I couldn't get a couple of them to budge. Plus it was hot, and I was lying in the dirt, and I just wasn't feeling it, so i talked myself out of it, by saying that it would be silly to drop the tank, until I buy the new sending unit, otherwise I'll have to do it twice.
That logic was enough to get me out from under the truck, and back into the A/C.

I gave serious consideration to cutting a panel out of the rear floor, but to do it right, I'd have to drop the tank anyway. I wouldn't feel comfortable cutting from the top, with out knowing exactly what is where.
