Story of two '72 K5's build

Extra voltage from the wrong alternator might have fried your battery too. I'd start there. Or, might have been bad battery to begin with.

I really dont even care what it is at this point.

It doesnt even hurt my pride right now to take it somewhere to get sorted. Just going to let it get taken care of and when it gets to Cali I can re-wire the whole thing anyway after a fresh break from the 1st Gen head aches.

Forgot to mention...I found a fuze hidden deep inside the dash that was blown and had everything aftermarket running through it. Changed it, changed the "felt to me to be a tad loose" alternator belt and she runs great again.

Oh, Word of advice.

Dont go to Johnson valley while KOH is going on. Your mental list of mods for your built will be forever changed...and not in a cheap or practical way.

I'm willing to bet that NOTHING in the top 20 finishing spots looks anything like a 1st Gen Blazer.....or even a full-bodied, body-on-frame truck of any kind!!!

KOH is a different sport, different planet, different budget......

Next time, try Moab. The truck you've already got will work perfectly there. :waytogo:

No No...Not any of the race rigs. Just if you had ever planned on staying mild on 1/2 tons....Dont go check out the trails at Johnson valley ha ha.

I fully intend on having as much fun breaking the 1/2's as I can before stepping up though. Besides, I just moved cross country, you think I can afford that crap right now:doah: ha ha.

After two years here in Cali, between training, Afghanistan and life the Blazer has been waiting patiently at the In-Laws house in NC.

Will be flying there for a three month school and will have a chance to see her again and get her up and running.

Already part shopping and it feels good.

I left her with a too large, gummed up carb, leaking oil cooler set-up, an electric fan with a bum t-stat which Is rigged to run full time not letting the engine get to temp, aaaaaand a 700r4 that's TQ converter locks in after 1st gear and it wont hold OD, It needs some sort of Mod that I forgot about in order to get things running smoothly.

So....

#1: Called JET today and got quoted for a custom made Quadrajet for my specific engine/tranny/drivetrain. So that will go on there.

#2: piecing together stainless braided lines, AN fittings for a better, leak free, and pretty looking oil cooler set-up.

#3: buying a t-stat for the electric fans

#4: Then taking it into the tranny place to get hooked up.

Father In-Law has tons of tools and is excited as I am.

Then it will be 3 months of Southeast spring/summer driving!

On that note....

Does anyone have anything to say about these build to your spec JET Carbs?

And does anyone run oil coolers in their 1st gens that want to post a pic or two of their set up? Mines a generic jegs kit with barb fittings and hose with a temp gauge sending unit in the middle. Its alright, but I want AN fittings and stainless hose.

So school out here is busier than I thought and the blazer was at in laws about an hour away.

So I fixed a leak, found 3 more new leaks.:doah:

Took of the PO's carter comp carb and put on a new edelbrock 600.

Drove it back to where it am at....

The 1hr drive was LONG!! Smokey and without OD. The leak drips on the header, the 700 won't get into Od.

It's with an old man I know who runs a tranny shop getting the 700 looked at.

Other than that she drives real well.

Sounds like the valve cover leak I had. I upgraded from the busted up cork gaskets to the reusable rubber ones for a couple bucks more and went from burning a quart of oil on my exhaust manifolds every 150 miles to not burning any oil at all during my last 500 miles of driving.

I have felpro cork ones right now...think I might try some rubber.

I have never had a problem with a dab of rtv and cork. Oh well.

I vote for those reusable ones too.

They are rubber and have a small steel insert under each bolt area so that it's impossible to overtighten the valvecover bolts. Most leaks are caused by excessive torque.... the cork gets compressed and distorted, the valvecover bends and the rest is history.

I don't recall them costing THAT much money.... save yourself the aggravation, and you'll be back to enjoying the driving season again. :waytogo:

cork is soooo 70's.. the blue rubber felpro's are where it's at...

So got everything running good....minus all the "character" ha ha

Made the 5-6 hour drive to Richmond, VA.

She cruised! At 65 EASY the whole way. Smooth with the 700r4 and 4.56's turning 2k @ 65mph. Put the foot in and she jumped to 80 and held it for a couples it's with no argue, wobble, vibrations. Then I backed down and continued on my 65mph way.

Downside.....added a whole quart of oil around halfway ha ha. Small tenant fluid leak too. But when ever I get her out to Cali I can address all of that. It's now under trees in VA, out of the sun so that my paint doesn't fry anymore.
