Story of two '72 K5's build

Of course it wasn't tough- the military is going through another stage... So you got a coach instead of a D.I..... They get to expain (pun intended) things. Well, it happens. Something about the computer era and all??

I think it was more it being an Army School and all. The Marine Corps still has rompin stompin DI's, Thankfully we have not been affected much by todays culture.

Family is first, true...But I have a strong healthy body and i have to many friends who had dreams of a long Marine Corps career only to have it ruined by the loss of a limb or worse, So who am i to not give it everything i got, Anything less would dishonor those i have fought beside who would give anything to have the blessing of good health.

P.S. The D60 is now under the blazer.

Wow... all I can say is:bow:
I have just started the deconstruction phase of my own project, and I hope it will turn out as nice as yours is looking. I'm definitely gonna keep watching this build. Great work

Well Thank you very much. Pretty excited to get moved into our new house and see about making some progress on this thing again.

Well my membership expired and after quickly "re-enlisting" with CK5 i realized that the blazer has been under the knife for 1 full year now.

Welcome to year 2!! Any progress since the last update?

Nope...Other than putting the D60 under the front for the move i havent had any time. Moving into a new house, building a privacy fence around an acre, landscaping, USMC training, etc....Things are not looking up this year when it comes to finding time for blazer.

Wow...Over a year since i have touched this thread.

Status...The Tub sits on the bent, hacked up frame. All of which is full of New and mostly new shiny parts.

The Previous Owner left me with a frame that has had the front and rear hacked off and then welded back... Crossmembers had been cut for the use of a PTO and it had been in a nasty accident, as evident by some major bends and twists in the front half. The TUB has been just...well a pain in my butt, in my attempts at body work, even with the help of an experianced body guy, it didnt turn out "restored" and i think its time to call it quits before i damge it any to where it couldnt be fixed. plus i couldnt pass up the thought of a untouched, unrusted body.

Where does this leave me? Well...Accepting the loss of a couple grand worth of LMC panels on the Tub and the decision to try and purchase this baby.

Its a 72, Never been lifted, mostly rust free body, no serious rust. 700R4 Which i am a fan of, Vintage Air AC set-up....Its a clean truck.

Plans are to enjoy the crap put of it, and slowly, one at a time, start transfering all of the parts meant for the old truck onto this. But for the rest of summer, and probably all of winter i am just gonna throw the soft top i have on it, roll up the sides and enjoy. At most, i might throw the shackle flip and rest of the 4" lift on there, but thats a maybe.

Bank said yes, waiting until the guy gets a night off work to drive it around some before i make a final decision.

What do ya think?

WIN!!!

If the old one is as bad as you say.... Then the whole "tough love" thing trying to repair a bad body and frame just doesn't make sense..... Especially with everything going on with your military career.

There is something very nice about a real, drivable non-project truck. The best part is that you will have a pile of "cool kid" parts for it...so when you feel like tackling a weekend project you can do it.

Compared to what you dealt with last time, these types of projects will be a cakewalk for you. :thumb:

Tough choice. But sounds like the right one to me.

Buy it, drive it and enjoy it. :D

You obviously, now know what to look for in the rust department. When you say, "little rust", how much you thinkin' ?

I would love to have mine running, but that probably is still a year off. With your current drive with the USMC, do you have the time to build the original?

Great to have you back Dave..:waytogo:

Holy crap, did you find that in Jacksonville?

Yep. Hopefully this new one works out.

just read the whole thread.

dooo itt!
i've found myself wishing for a full vert, driveable rig lately. projects are fun, but so is driving. and that looks pretty shnazzy.

Blocked by NMCI, but if it looks anything like those pics, and moves on its own power.......buy it and ship it to me!

Link to a post about the truck...let me know what you think. There is a photo album link a few posts into the thread.

Pretty set on the truck, heading out to drive it, and probably pick it up on friday. Thoughts?

I like it. :waytogo:

I went through a similar thing with my old '81 Jimmy. Kept beating myself up trying to improve/fix it, but a frame that was bent and twisted and a body that had been hacked, tacked and whacked into place brought me nothing but more and more frustration. So...I bought a somewhat rough 90 to replace it. Body rusty, but nothing I couldn't deal with. Most important was dead stock and straight (frame wise anyways) and cheap.

It set me back a few years, but at some point you gotta just cut bait and start fresh if that's what needs to be done. In my case it needed to be done. At least I have a pile of cool parts for the new ride...and so do you.
