Story of two '72 K5's build

I read the whole thread yesterday... to bad about all the hard work and the disapointment.
The blue blazer you found looks good fom here.
I always like to have a running truck to work on,a truck sitting for months in the garage takes some of the fun out of it. And you got alot of real nice parts to put on the new one.

Good luck man!

Well drove her home last night...pretty impressed.

She rattled along nicely at 60-65 at 2000rpm, AC blowing cold and radio working nice. The 700r4, 32" tires and 4:56 gears work nice together. Steering feels great, transmision shifts good. Sometimes if acelerating slowly past 45 it will get "confused" so to speak, but just let off the gas and then give it some, or just put your foot into for a second and it figures things out and shifts.

Only a few small things, like a rear view mirror, chip on the windshield, knob on window turn handle, etc...a few small things like that. But mechanicly sound, fun to drive. The cam is a bit lumpy at Idle, but its a good sounding lumpy, not a "this thing is about to stall" lumpy.

Going on vacation to Tn today, so gotta wait on pics.

After talking to him for an hour or so, he was happy enough that it was going to a good home with a blazer enthusiast that he threw in a brand spanin new soft top.

Well done! :waytogo:

We'll be waiting on the pics....

Deuling, your truck would be doing 2550 rpm in Drive at 65, and 1800 rpm in OD.

Scottishdave's rig should be turning 2175 rpm's at 65 in OD.

You need to re-check your tach or your speedo I think.

Nice score man! Way to go! Life is short so you better spend as much time as possible driving the stuff you want instead of building it.

Drove the blazer around today to a few old body shops that do lots of resto work on old cars/trucks to see who they would recomment to fix some small issues with the blazer and give it a looking over also.

I have little to no time for anything, so all this will be done by a couple shops. Truck drives great, but i just want to make this thing as reliable as possible, safe and driver friendly before anything else.

Here is the list of things i should be having fixed this week.

1. The most major would be the leak between the 700r4 and the transfer case. It fills the case and then leaks out the speedo cable area from what i can see. AAMCO will do it for 400 bucks, this includes the seals on the front and rear of the case.

-QUESTIONS: I have heard that some transfer case's use tranny fluid, while some used gear oil. Anyone know what it should be in the 72?

2. Steering wheel is a little loose and the turn signal lever does not work, just kind of flops around.

3. Entire ignition is loose, i have to hold it while i turn the key to stop the whole thing from turning.

- #2 AND #3 Are being done by an electrical place who will also check out the rest of the wiring, as the truck has electric fans, tranny temp, oil temp, tach, and volts gauges, B+M shift controller, etc...just to make sure everything looks legit, safe, etc....

4. Not a necessity, but i want the front end steering checked out...probably go ahead and replace tie-rod ends, and other joints.

After all that, My plans are to put the lift that i have on which is...

4" EZ-rides, 56" rear springs with ORD lip and longer ORD HD shackles. Then add some new Bilstiens, steering stabalizer and some 35" All-Terrains. Hoping this should also smooth out the ride alittle. The 32" mt's and old shocks are a little rough.

Gear oil in the tcase.

I like the blue blazer. :waytogo:

For an original 205 on our rigs, yes. But tranny fluid in the tcase won't hurt it. What I'd be more concerned about, is that if there's tranny fluid in the tcase, its not in the tranny.

Ok...So fixed the blinkers and steering wheel and ignition myself to maintain some dignity, had a guy comeover to replace the windshield. And since i severely lack lots of free time to worry about pride I...

Spent some timeTalking with an old guy at a resto-shop with the hidden motive of learning what shops were trustworthy and proficient and they pointed me to an older gentleman at an electrical shop who is, as we speak, going through the entire electrical to make sure there was no bootyfab done by the PO, just for peace of mind.

Aamco is going to re-seal the t-case and check over the tv cable adjustment, and the B@M shift controller that the PO put on there.

Then...I will be putting the TC 4" ez-rides, shackle flip and 56" in the rear in prep for what I have this enroute as we speak

35x12.50r15's and Bilstien 5100's.

Ok...So i see all the time some people with thier shocks the normal way and some people run them upside down. Is thier any benifit to either way? Or is it dependant on the shock. Mine are the Bilstien 5100's.

This is what happens to a tub that nobody wants to buy..."The claw" picked her right off the frame and THREW the hell out of the tub and it crashed in the giant pile of metal. Recieved a whoping 120 bucks for the thing. Dont worry though, the rolling chassis is back in the garage.
