Story of two '72 K5's build

Whew....Got her back on all fours and off the jackstands before any serious "might as wells" kicked in.

Still gotta change out the tie rod ends/drag link ends and either a new stabilizer or none at all. Then new rotors, calipers and pads, mmmmm..think thats it up front.

Mess with the brake lines in the back, double check the fuel lines, change the rear diff fluid, probably new brake shoes and cylinders in the rear, aaaand...think thats it out back.

Then having the exhuast redone with my flowmaster 50's and going from the 3" pipe to 2.5" Probably swap out those headmans for the hookers i have. New U-joints, change the oil, and probably one or two more little things.

Double check all bolts on the suspension, put the shocks on, mount the 35's aaaaaand slap the table.

Nope...last thing is the soft top.

There, I think thats it.

That list was written primarily so that i can come back to remember what i gotta do:doah:

Lookin real nice!:waytogo: It looks like you did drip some gear lube on your pretty white driveway though:shame:

:haha:

Thanks guys...I was giving it some character. I actually looked at all my nieghbors driveways driving out today and noticed they were all perfect and thought "Well that just aint right" So i did something about it today, ha ha.

No...Who would have known it could drip out of the breather tube if you flip the axle upside down:dunno:

Very nice.

Do you have enough slip joint left in the rear driveshaft to move that rear axle back in the future?

The side view looks like you have a perfect stance right now.... But if those rear springs settle in the coming weeks, it would be a "might as well" moment to throw a set of zero rates back there and move than axle back another 1.5"

Slap the table? I like that. :D

:usaflag:

Echoing the move the rear diff back an inch or so...other than that :waytogo:

Ahhh...one step ahead. I have on my dining room table a set of DIY4x Spring perches with those ever so handy extra holes to move the axle around. I remember how "un-centered" it was on the last truck, so i bought em a few weeks ago.:waytogo:

Remind the exhaust shop about that too so that they can leave a little "extra" room for the exhaust if they end up going up-and-over the axletube.... it would stink to have to cut off and re-weld new exhaust because the axle hit it afterwards.

Trying to figure out how i want the exhuast to exit....straight out the back, out the sides or dumped.

I kinda like the sides, but having trouble seeing it as being practical with the shackle flip.

Out the sides is tricky. A lot of guys will say that out the back is no bueno because the fumes will come back into the truck... but I think that's more of a factor for trucks where the rear glass rolls down. Clearly not an issue for us "cool kids". :D

My old setup was a true-dual setup with an H-Pipe and the mufflers tucked up as high as possible behind the transfercase and as close to the center as possible. Basically sandwiching the driveshaft with a muffler on either side. I was using the Flowmaster 70s (?) the largest, quietest muffler they make... things were pretty tight.

The exhaust pipes ran along either side of the gas tank and there was room to sneak them past the shackleflip on both sides. If you can get them to turn down and extend slightly past the rear bumper / rollpan area you will avoid a lot of excessive echo.

Mine used to come straight out back and even with the top all the way off back-seaters would complain of fumes while driving. Never bothered me though:D

I'm trying to figure out how I want mine now too. Extra hard now that I have the poly tank:doah:

I am going to try the sides...Although they charge more, I will Probably go to the local 4x4 shop we have as they will probably understand routing an exhuast for a 4x4 better than a run of the mill place.

I kinda wish i would have got 70's...I am not big on super loud. My 2-door tahoe has a dual in-single out flowmaster 70 and its got a nice mellow tone.

Anyone have much experiance with the flowmaster 50's?

Lower numbered Flowmasters are typically louder....40s are the loudest.

You can try to fit a set of resonators in line BEFORE the Flowmasters to help mellow out the sound, but it's going to be hard to find space for them. Most luxury-type production cars will use a resonator to take some of the "rasp" out of the exhaust tone before it gets to the final set of mufflers.

I'd talk with the muffler shop and see if they have any reccomendations. Worst case, maybe they can install a set of 70s and you can just sell off those 50-series to someone else without losing too much $$$ in the process. I know that the 70s will fit your truck since I had it done. I can post a pic if you think it will help.

Here..... this is best way to get a good exhaust routing photo for your friends.

You can see that the H-Pipe goes under the NP205 output and the Flowmasters are as close to the transfercase as possible....

:haha::haha:

Nice one...I can see on yours you had the pipes straight out the back. Any issues with fumes?

No fumes.... but remember I was running no top and no rear passengers.

You may still have issues even with fixed rear glass if your tailgate seals aren't in good shape, so be prepared to spend a little more time working out those bugs if you decide to keep the hardtop installed.
