Story of two '72 K5's build

Not a massive update. Was not able to score some time until today. For some reason I was takeing my time with the brake a fuel lines, cleaning parts, etc.... All i ended up doing was brake and fuel lines, shocks, the crossmember and a bunch of cleaning.

Also found these stainless rubber coated clamps at lowes that i used for the lines. I had to bend one side and drill the holes out slightly, but i think that they add a nice touch.

That's beautiful Dave.. :waytogo:

Is that the new/old Inline-tube that you ordered back in the day for the first rig? Or, just cleaned up old?

Either way, that looks sweet and very clean...:pimp:

Well where to begin.

So about a week or two ago I go to put the engine together. This Brand new crate motor has sat for over a year mounted to a rolling chassis. I would turn it over on occasion, but not near as often as i should have.

Old frame now gone, The engine has been on a stand for few months. I start turning her over a few times and i hear a scraping sound and feel a bit of resistance. "****" The cylinder walls have probably rusted up some:doah: Well i turn her until I hear a "clunk" and it just stops. Back it up some, turn back and "clunk" Engine stops turning. I am useing only a ratchet and i put a bit off muscle into it and the crank bolt from 1972 shears right off:doah::doah: So....I come back an hour later and turn the engine with the flywheel and get the same results.

So thinking a valve may be hung open i pull a head. And see Beautiful cylinder walls.:dunno: I turn the engine and again "clunk" Engine stops. Plus I can still hear the scraping sound. So....I pull the other head and again, Beautiful cylinder walls, WTF:dunno: I spin the engine and "clunk" she stops turning and i still hear the scraping.

I stand back and stare at the damn thing in utter confusion. AND THEN....I notice the there is a perfect circle scraped into the flywheel, I look closer and realize that one of the bolts for the engine stand arms is pressing against the flywheel causing the before mentioned scraping sound and at a point, the bolt drops into one of the large holes in the flywheel causing a "clunk" and preventing me from turning her over.:doah::doah::doah:

I just pulled the heads of a brand new motor for nothing...Guess who feels like an idiot.

Here is the culprit

No rust here:doah:

No hung valve:doah:

So, I take the block to a machine shop and the take the broken bolt out. I buy new head gaskets, etc.. etc... put the engine back together and she is now in her new home after a long and needless adventure.

I hear ya man. for some reason, the simple problem never occurs to me either. I always assume its the worse thing possible... then feel stupid when the simple problem is found. /doh!
glad everything turned out ok though.

I pretty much troubleshoot everything in reverse order:doah:Start Massive and then work my way down to what the problem actually was....like a loose bolt.

Better than my younger days where my troubleshooting was to simply keep replacing parts until the problem went away.

Made two 5 second cranks, then on the third i got a "fart" so pulled out the camera for the fourth crank and first run of the motor.

**** it, I cant embed it, so here is the link

Got her outside on actual tires again with the hood on. I tried useing some cheap hose for a part of the oil cooler line and am paying for it. She sat at idle for about 5 minutes super smooth before i noticed the leak. Need to fix it tommorow and then off for a test drive.
