Stranded...waiting on a flatbed

Im looking in the official Parts Illustration manual and it shows my exhaust manifold but doesn't show any heat shield listed as a part

Why not buy better quality wires? I’ve been running msd 8mm wires for the last ten years. Still haven’t had a problem. They have high heat boots and even with headers haven’t had any issue with cracking or melting. Just a thought. I had two of the stock replacement ones melt in the same summer. Then went msd and have never had issue. I also am running a stock hei distributor. But it is hooked to a msd 6 box and has a accel super coil I got for free. I’ve never tried a accel dizzy but it sounds like after your issues I wouldn’t want to. If I ever need a distributor if this one goes I will put back in a msd to go with all the other parts of theirs I’m running. I run about 20 degrees btdc. So I’m probably 40 or so when it kicks in the advance. I always do mine by vacuum though because even when I try to do it by the timing marks it doesn’t seem to run right. Hope you figure out what’s up. It’s frustrating until you finally get everything running good again.

Don't know why so many people bash Accel...:dunno::dunno:

I've been around cars for a long long time...
back in the 70's, Accel was one of the few brands available for aftermarket ignition parts.. I started with dual point dizzy's, Super coils, yellow wires, copper core plugs etc.. all pioneered by Accel.

I still use them occasionally when I need to grab a dizzy right then, because O'Rileys usually keeps them in stock...
if I have time, I use MSD... having said that, I have had more failures with MSD... of all the Accel dizzy's I have installed, not one has ever failed.

I'm not saying that they are better than others, but in my opinion they are pretty solid. Most ignition failures I read about after people have changed a dizzy can usually be traced to the root problem after something fails a second time, and the poster is lost for answers... hell, look how many posts there are about 180 out dizzy's,, failure to fire, burnt up coils, burnt up wires, etc.

A lot of the time, the poster is clueless as to how to drop a dizzy's in place and set static timing... most can't even figure out how to get the oil pump slot to line up...
Installing a new HEI dizzy is one of the most simple things to do with a SBC or BBC..
I don't take much credence when a poster states that brand X is junk just because of a bad experience with a part when there are many other things that could have caused the part to fail.

All companies outsource, and quality of most aftermarket parts has gone down over the years... MSD is a perfect example of this, jump on the web and see how many people bad mouth them now....

Then go back and re-read them and look at how many of the negative posts have such bad grammar and spelling that I have to question the people posting them...

Both MSD and Accel will go way out of their way to make things right, even if they know the owner or poor installation is or was the root cause of the failure of their parts..

ok....rant off.

I've had good luck with most of the Accel parts I've used. The HEI supercoil I bought 13 years ago now was a huge improvement at the time, and will be going back on, when I de-TBI my 79.

I cannot say about current parts.

Accell put out some bad injectors 10 years ago or so. It affected a lot of people. Obviously with the other failures mentioned, they garnered a reputation, for good reason.

I've had some of their plug wires on my truck for ~15 years and so far so good. Not a real complex component, but at least they must have gotten the compound right!
