Strangest NON-trail carnage

When my Th350/208 died I swapped in a 465/205. I was heading to my house and my buddy was folowing me in his 83 Buick Regal. Came to a stop sign, put it in creeper and floored it. Tires started smoking, power shifted into 2nd (1st?), the 10b rearend didn't like that. Broke the carrier, but didn't spit anything out. Not a problem I thought to myself, my house is only 3 miles away with 5 turns, I'll just lock in the hubs and drive home in front wheel drive. That worked fine untill I went to make the first turn, broke a u-joint in the front axle. When that went it took both shafts with it. We towed it the rest of the way with the Buick. Once we got it home, and I inspected the damage, The c-clip was knocked off one of the axle shafts in the rear end. I got lucky that the shaft didn't walk out.

Another time I was leaving a friends house and decided to do a burnout. Rev it up and dump the clutch in 2nd, this time the center pin in the 12b broke. Locked in the hubs and did a front wheel burnout on the way home. :D

I've also spit out quite a few rear u-joints since I swapped in the 14bff.

I just got my 496 running and I was going to my buddy's shop. At the last light, I blipped the throttle and the next thing I know, my drive-line is bouncing around on the ground. I pulled over to the side and picked up the pieces of the yoke and unbolted the other end of the drive-line. I locked the hubs and continued to my buddy's shop. He told me I shouldn't have put the mini spool in. I told him the diff was still open.
I drove my blazer home on the front axle, and started looking for a yoke. I was just going to put a new yoke in till my nephew notice a hole in the diff cover. Oh uh, Turns out the two smaller spider gears broke and one piece lodges itself between the carrier and the pinion effectively locking the rear-end. With the motor still putting power out, it searched for the next weakest link which turned out to be the yoke and broke that too. And the motor didn't even lug down. It looked like the spider gears wasn't in the healthiest state before the kaboom and the 496 didn't help.
I replaced the rear end with a 14bsf and I ended up blowing up my th350 on my way to Pismo on Memorial Day weekend. Pismo is 20 minutes away from my home. I didn't get my blazer going till next Memorial Day.

The fuel pump on the k10 took a dump going down the freeway at about 65mph... started bucking and jumping like crazy...
A couple odds and ends but nothing major...

My dad sheared all the bolts that hold his axle shaft in his rear end a while back while getting on the freeway... I'm sure he was haulin' a$$ knowing him....

lmao very impressive

Yeah I hate to admit it but that punched out 390 Ford is one of the best engines I've ever seen... super reliable, gobbs of torque and likes to rev up to 4,500k+ time and time again...

had my stock list blazer with the recalled firestones on it and was in the fast lane going a little bit faster than 65. the tread separated from the tire and was still attached at one spot while it was spinning around destroying the rear quarter of the truck the whole thing jeered to the right and i crossed a 4 lane highway strait into a giant bush i thank god everyday there just happened to be nobody next to me or else i most likey would have died.

same truck about a year later blew the slip yoke on a transfer from highway to another highway slammed on the brakes right when i heard it spinning around under the truck. still today you can see the 50 foot long skid marks from my truck going strait to the side of the road i got out and looked under and there were huge dents on my frame and it somehow sheared the aluminum gas line so i took the shaft off and called a good girlfriend of mine to tow me home lol

and this one was just pure stupidity but fairly funny but it was also in the same truck i was bored driving around with some friends and i decided it would be a good idea to rev the engine to 3500 rpm and drop it into 1....this was a very bad idea the carrier exploded and put holes in the 10 bolt diff but im glad in some way or another all of these things happened because they have brought my truck to where it is today with tons:D

i have never seen anything like that before but mabey thats just because im used to bulletproof 14 bolts

Its loose bolts, plain and simple.

I'd bet that both rears use the same size bolts.

Loose bolts will shear quite easily compared to bolts that have tons of friction between the axle flange and hub (which basically never shear).

Just driving alongand the thing stopped moving. I gave it gas, it revved, and nothing. I shifted the trans, transfer case, and anything else I could! thing would roll forward about 5 feet and stop rolling. Rev it up, let out the clutch and roll another 5 feet - not going to work for me since I had another 7 or 8 miles to go. I got towed home, and assumed it was something in the transfer case. I dropped it, took it apart, and nothing. I brought it to a d/l shop to confirm it was fine, and they said it was okay (but it gave me a convenient chance to upgrade to 32 spline output). I put it back in, but still no movement. Now I dropped the trans, and brought it in. Nothing wrong. I looked in the bellhousing, and the hub on the clutch disc had sheared off. I replaced my relatively new top of the line Centerforce with a Sachs, and has been great ever since!

had my steering wheel come off in the middle of a decent speed turn at one of the more busier intersections in town :haha:

toolin along bout 55 in my jeep (1 tons w/ 42s) and the drivers side front wheel bearings froze up! did a bootleg 180 in 4 lanes of traffic and ended up slidin backwards into oncomming traffic. :doah::haha::D

pucker up baby.

Scattered a 12 bolt rear backing out of a parking spot.

Had an oil cooler line for my 6.2 spring a pinhole leak...which sprayed a fine mist of hot oil onto the alt, which then ignited the mist of oil (60+ psi, 200+F)

It got very exciting for 30 seconds or so, nice big orange flames coming from between the fender and the hood...fortunately as soon as I killed the engine the fire went out.

That's what a couple of people have said but I keep an eye on stuff and unless they loosened up within a matter of days they were tight... plus the other side was still torqued down so it seems unlikely one side had a bunch of bolts come loose and the other is still 100% snug...
IMO I think somewhere along the lines the wrong grade bolts were put in...

Had a carrier bearing go out on me drving around one day. The rubber bushing popped out of the bracket. Drvshaft clunked around making lots of noise at 5 mph.

A worse one: I drove to work one Wednesday. I hopped in at 430am and headed for work. It was wound up at 35-40 mph. It would not shift into 3rd as far as I could tell. I had had this problem before on an older tranny(governor gear on th400). So I continued the 13 miles to work since I was running behind. I made it about 5 miles and it started smoking. I pulled over and it shut off. I popped the hood to a large cloud of steam. It over heated so bad it stretched the water pump bolts and the coolant poured out between the water pump and block.

Apparently on te SUnday prior, I had moved the transfer case lever into 4lo while working in the cab and forgot about it. Because I moved the lever, my engine overheaded to cotastrophic failure. I drove it for about 3-4 weeks and ended up haveing about a quart of oil drip out of the exhaust a day. When I took it apart, there was cooked oil on the top of all the pistons. I sold it to a friend thinking it was going to cost more to rebuild than what I wanted to put in to it.

It has since had the block cleaned and honed(no boring req'd) and the crank turned. It needs pistons, cam and all bearings and some other internals. He has it in storage while he is in Germany for 3 years(well, Iraq for two Germany for 1), he plans to built it when he gets back. If not, mybe ill buy it and finish it for the burb.
