So I am finishing up the 52" swap and the very front mount of the spring hanger is like 2 inches away from my frame. Not only that but were it would bolt to the frame if it were flush has a huge cutout on the frame making it impossible to drill a hole and mount it. Below are some pics. You guys think this is ok?

What would you recommend? I can't really bend the front of the hanger up to the frame. As far as the big hole, your referring to where the bottom bolt of the L bracket goes threw the frame right? There is a very thick steal plate on the other side of that so I am not too worried.

Any ideas?

Bad! MUCH BAD!

Plate/weld! Box! You're not going to get away with a bolt-on solution to that little problem.


Also, it doesn't matter if there's a big steel plate on the other side of the that huge hole. I could bolt to a 5" thick chunk of metal, but if the nut side doesn't snug up against something, it's pulling through. RETHINK>
 
Fill hole. Punch new hole for bolt. life much more better. Have more money because not sued for being a lazy dumba$$.
Just my 2 cents, as a weld inspector.
 
I just did this same thing and mine turned out fine. No offense, but, WTF did you do? that definitely is not right.
 
I didn't think it was ok either but just trying to go the easy way, er lazy way. Thanks for the input

I guess I better weld in a small box in the front there. And I will drill a new hole for the lower L bracket bolt. That work???

I just bolted up the other side and it is the same way. My frame starts to curve up and since the hanger was obviously on the flat part of the frame before both sides of the hanger will not sit flush.

Mine is the same way. I put in a spacer just like in your picture and welded everything up.
 
Must be a 77 thing... Thanks for the info. Did you just weld in a round steel spacer like the one in my pic or did you weld in a tiny box?

You think that if I weld in that spacer I will be ok?

I put in a spacer just like in your picture and welded it to the frame and to the bracket. I welded all of the brackets together and welded all of it to the frame too.

I've run mine like that for the last year and a half with no issues.
 
Awesome thanks for the info. I will weld all of them but the L bracket because my bumper goes between it and the frame and I want to be able to remove the bumper.

Guess its time to practice my welding!

I keep looking at this pic in Jekbrowns write up, It looks like if you take the front bracket back off, and remove the spacer, and pull the hanger up to the frame, it might bend it a bit, then re-install the front bracket, it should fit correctly.

I think the frame on the 77 is different then our mid 80's models. That thing just doesn't look right.
 
Mine was tweaked a little bit, nothing a pry stick and a BFH couldn't handle. it still bolted up flush.
 
Ya my frame is definitely not tweaked. And Jason its like almost an inch away, no way its bending up a little. I looked at it again tonight and no way it will sit flush... I will put a few more pics of the other side tomorrow.

You think welding in the spacer would be ok?
 
To be blunt, you should have just contacted Kert at DIY4X and be done with it.

opinions vary.
thats the great thing about life and all its choices.
I myself cannot just stroke a check, but I value the opinion of those who have done it already.
I plan on this swap myself, so keep the ideas coming.

I still don't like that idea.I look at it this way. If you have to ask CK5 if it is strong enough, than it is not.
How about a 3/16 plate running down the outside of the frame and form it all the way down to the bottom of the bracket. Then weld that to it and redrill hole.
